Andrew Carnegie once said, "He who dies rich, dies in disgrace." In other words, if you die with money as opposed to spending it while alive, you've done something that should be looked upon with shame or disappointment.

Then again, the philosophy of just about everybody on Wall Street is "The guy who dies with the most toys, wins." The more you have when you go, the better a job you did while you were alive.

As a gamer, which philosophy do you think matches yours and gaming in general? Is it all about the high score or the fun you have getting there? Does it matter when you cross the finish line or that you gave it umpteen-thousand tries before finally managing to do so?

Both? First and foremost, I want to have fun, but I also want to be number one whenever I can.

It matters that you did what you did and you enjoyed it too.

Critical acclaim and glory comes later if that's what you want.

It depends what game.
In games like Geometry Wars, half the fun is trying to get to the top of the scoreboards and be the best among your friends.
Although, in other games, mainly RPG's and such, I find that most of the fun is in making your way to the end of the journey, and experiencing the adventure of going on an adventure.

Gaming in general, it's subjective. Different people play different games for different reasons.

Personally, I play it for the artistic value. So to me, the experience is most important, but it is only complete if I actually finish the game. So both are very important.

I play purely for the experience, I think of games as being ways of entering virtual worlds where otherwise impossible things are possible! I do try to complete games though, so I can get full value for money.
