Here's something I was thinking about today: when is it appropriate to stop waring people about potential spoilers? Now, I tend to give it a few weeks or so before I stop putting up spoiler warnings, but what about you fellow Escapists? Do you wait less or even longer for different forms of entertainment (games/movies/books/etc.)? Or do you not warn people at all?
Depends. If it's a huge blockbuster game/movie/book, then a couple of weeks will do. After that everybody will know Dumbledore dies on page 556. When dealing with more obscure media, it will take a lot longer. Shadow of the Colossus released almost 5 years ago and I'd still put the ending in spoilertags.
It's entirely dependent on the medium, and the person you're relating the information to.
Titanic is based heavily on real world events so ostensibly a spoiler would also consist of a history book.
The Ship sinks and thousands die in one of the most infamous maritime disasters of the century, subsequent investigations revolutionize maritime safety forever. And it's a bittersweet ending in the movie by James Cameron.
Citizen Kane is such a famous movie and often cited as an exemplar of many novel cinematic, narrative and characterization tropes and ideas from which many movies, motifs and hommages have stemmed, so it's also an example of history in that respect. Such fame in of itself makes it challenging to preclude foreknowledge of its famous twist.
Rosebud was his sled.
The Shawshank Redeption is an excellent movie thats lesser known but even so an extremely well made movie and since few have heard of it or seen it, few know about its twist ending. But all the while its such a famous and excellent ending that no one wants to spoil the feeling of --spoiler-- when it occurs.
The word I spoiled in that predescription was "Elation".
Andy escapes and Red makes parole, making a heartwarming ending.
Due to the situational appropriateness of spoilers in reference to a movie's quality, fame and age as well as your friend's willingness and interest to see said movie determines if a spoiler should be indicated, or negated.
i always warn for spoilers, even really old games, just in case. there are old games i want to play that i haven't had chance yet and i wouldn't like it if someone gave something away.
This pretty much what I do. I still put spoiler warnings up if I'm talking about FF X and the original (And the best) Italian Job. It's just something I do.
And thank God xkcd has put the bloody search function back!
Spoilers warnings always. Unless the discussion is about the ending of a game or movie or book, but then the discussion title is a spoiler warning itself.

Ahh, I always love joke spoilers, they do make me laugh. Heil the Fuhrer!
I spoiler for things that are either very popular or very recent. Or both. If it seems likely that my audience will never read/watch/play the thing in question, I won't bother.
