I finally got around to buying mass effect (i've had ME2 since release) and am going to create a character for a straight playthrough of both campaigns (and probably for ME3 when it comes out)

what I want to know is which class do you think i should use? i have no preference over combat, tech or biotics. so if you can vote and give your reasons below i'd be really grateful :)

EDIT: assume i'm playing through on the hardest difficulty

They're all good, but if you plan on playing above normal difficulty, I'd suggest not using an Adept. Biotics only effects non-armoured foes (shields, barrier and armour negate things like throw, lift and singularity).

I went with vanguard in both the first time, than soldier for the second runs. I head that they're all good except adept, but of those two I preferred vanguard in the first for barrier, vanguard in the second for charge. I haven't played above normal though.

Only tried Soldier and Adept myself. The adept is a bit harder to play as my soldier could just kill his way through most things.
I recommend the soldier out of those two anyways.

Whichever one fits your style best.
I prefer Vanguard, as I love charging in and knocking fools out. I think it also makes a certain Lair of the Shadow Broker boss fight 100% more entertaining (it's a stellar fight, regardless, though).

My favorite setup in ME2 so far was as a Vanguard with the Geth Shield Boost ability (useful for reckless players like myself who charge in and take a lot of damage). In Mass Effect, I prefer playing as an Adept. I like using pistols for some reason, and the class has some great crowd control attacks. Engineer is good too, as you can upgrade Electronics and end up with a ridiculous amount of shields.

But, you should do what you want to do. If you're stumped about what fits your preferences, read through the classes on the Mass Effect Wiki [http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Mass_Effect_Wiki] and decide. A big part of Mass Effect is making the story feel like your version, so take advantage of that.

Well the combat wasn't great in ME1 so I usually just went Soldier and ran in all guns blazing so I could get to the lovely talky bits quicker.

ME2 the Sentinel was king for me, made Insanity diffculty quite manageable.

ENGINEER!!!

It's seriously underrated in my opinion. In Mass Effect playing as Engineer can net you both AI hacking and combat drone, and if you take domination as your loyalty skill you can have your own mini army. It's fun as hell to hack/dominate an enemy leader and then watch them slaughter their own troops.

What is it with Mass Effect threads distracting me today. I actually have "work" to do right now.

Adept was pretty weak in ME1, but totally kicks ass in ME2.

I would play ME1 as a soldier, and then switch your class in ME2 to either Infiltrator (if you have the patience for more stealth-based play), Vanguard (if you enjoy close combat) or stick with Soldier.

Still, Engineer and Adept are pretty fun, too. You can't really pick a wrong class in ME2.

Sentinel's my favourite. Then again, I never played the game(s) on any difficulty other than normal, so I'm not sure how effective it is. I just like having such a wide range of abilities.

That fight is amazing as a Vangaurd. Especially the moment at the beginning where you say, "Hey! I can do that too. Get back here *****!"

My favorite Shepard, the one I consider as canon, is a Vangaurd. But I've also played through as an Adept and a Sentinel and liked them both. Adept is tricky but rewarding because in the beginning you're quite a bit more vulnerable than a soldier counterpart, but with enough levels, nothing can touch you and you can take down a lot of enemies at once.

Sentinel, especially on default difficulty, is my favorite. It's very, very useful to have the ability to hit shields and armor on your mc. It gives you flexibility in your party makeup and if your squad is ko'ed, you can take on everything by yourself without too much trouble. Added bonus: sentinel shield looks fucking badass.

I've played primarily Vanguard on both games (Shotgun is a kill all on the first and SMG is sweet on the second with fire rounds)...

I think that might be exactly what I said, actually. Haha.

I went for infiltrator as I like shooting things from a distance and hacking things, in the absence of any criteria I say go for that!

If you have Kasumi's DLC, I'd reccomend either the sentinal or soldier, it's a tough choice for me. The locust smg is better than most assault rifles, and I love the tech armor ability, but the Revenant is also a murderous weapon that only soldiers get, and adrenilene rush can get you out of some bad situations that without it you'd be dead.

I've only used Sentinel and Adept, but I say go with Adept if you want to take down shields quicker and get your team to focus on health, and use Sentinel for good all-round stuff.
