Can we have Eve Online in the list please? I know it's a galaxy and not a universe but it's still the closest there is.

I also didn't add Star Wars, or Dune or the like because these need to be sci-fi universes that had their roots in videogames.
Also, Star Wars is Fantasy. There is no science involved with that fiction.
Star Wars is not fantasy. Star Wars is an epic space opera.
I will refer you to Episodes 1-3. Before those, I would have agreed with you. Besides, still fantasy. Space Opera's are usually sci-fi, therefore rooted in some form of science, and Star Wars has zero science involved.
Bleh, I have been outwitted.

I MUST RETURN TO MY CAVE OF SHAME!
It's okay, at some point we have all been suckered by Mr. Lucas.

For me it's a tie between Half Life and Mass Effect. They're both very different, but I just can't pick.

Though can't you maybe consider it sci-fi after Lucas tried to give the Force a scientific explanation with the midi-chlorians and stuff?

Mass Effect. I'd genuinely like to live in that universe - maybe it's because you get to see so much more of it and everything seems very real and alive. Also, uh, Garrus. >.> Yeah.

I am going with Deus Ex because out of all the ones on the list I found this to be the most fun I have had in a PC game.

Also I would have chosen Star Wars if I could :/

Mass Effect.

The fact there is a encyclopaedia in game helps the player realise how much thought went into creating the universe.
people read that?

I want to say Halo, just because I find it more memorable. I'm playing ME2 on insanity mode and I find I can't remember any of the details involving people, names, or places, and stuff.

You should replace Starcraft with 40k, it's the same thing, but better.

On topic though: Mass Effect by miles.

Mass Effect Is the next Star Wars In my opinion, there is so much potential there, maybe an FPS, maybe an RTS, theres potential, races, technoligies, characters, I just love it.

Another vote for Mass Effect. I think it's basis in reality and only the slightly far future makes it so understandable and appealing.

EDIT: To clarify, by "in reality", I mean that there is an astronomically correct Solar System and apart from their being alien ruins on Mars and a huge space portal replacing a moon of Pluto, and the physics-defying Element Zero, there's nothing really that's totally unbelievable.

While a number of the choices available have excellent narrative and gameplay as an overall best universe ever I'd have to go with Warhammer 40k.

The overall scale of the timeline and versitility of the factions and characters mean that a story can be told at anytime from any perspective.

All of the lore is consistentn and far reaching but doesn't need to over-explain itself.

Not to mention it's a fairly unique story about a human civilisation that while powerful and fearsome, is decaying from the inside, long past it's glory days and blinded by fear and rage at a universe that is utterly against them.

The actions and reasoning of "heroes" in this universe are delivered in such a way that despite being in a lot of ways completely abhorrent, the player/reader (yes there are books and they're pretty good) can often see the glory and honor that the characters are conditioned to feel.

Also let's not forget that they've long ago forgotten how most of the technology actually works so they view technical manuals as religious texts, blindly following instructions as part of a ritual, thats pretty damn funny.

I chose "Halo". I know it isn't kosher among geeks to say anything positive about Halo(or popular things in general that aren't made by Joss Whedon), but I'm not a geek, I'm a nerd(who doesn't like Joss Whedon), so fuck it.

There's a lot of depth to the Halo universe that the standard fratboys and douchebag (like that kid pictured on the 2nd or 3rd page of the recent "Dr. Mark" feature, seriously, if I could reach through my screen and smack someone itwould be that kid) who frequent Halo couldn't possibly comprehend.
