Ok, so my old laptop crapped out yesterday so I've been looking for a replacement, I will be useing it mostly for gaming. Ihave found 2 that are in my price range and look good;

Processor: Intel Core i7-2670qm 2.2Ghz
RAM: 8GB DDR3
HDD: 750GB 7200RPM
Graphics: nVidia Geforce GTX 635M 2GB DDR3
Display: 15.6" LED backlight 1920 x 1080
Optical Drive: DVDRW
Price: 879 pounds

Processor: Intel Core i7-2670qm 2.2Ghz
RAM: 8GB DDR3
HDD: 2x500GB 7200RPM
Graphics: nVidia Geforce GTX 540M 2GB DDR3
Display: 17.3" LED backlight 1600 x 900
Optical Drive: Blu-ray
Price: 838 pounds

Both have the standard magubins; Windows 7 64 bit, 6 cell battery, 802.11b/g/n.

I'm leaning towards option 1 because while the screen is smaller it has better resolution. But I'd like to get other opinions and since I know noone who knows anthing about computers I'll turn it over to you guys.

I've put a poll in so I can see the overall opinion, but please leave a reason why that is the better option. If you choose "other" as in neither of these please give an alternative but bear in mind I want a laptop and my budget is about 850-900 so I'm already pushing it with option 1.

EDIT: added the processor model nos.

They are pretty similar really but the main thing I noticed was the resolution and pixel density difference. The 15" has a better density with a resolution of 1920X1080, meaning it's going to look nicer at the cost of less actual screen to look at. Additionally considering the higher model GTX chipset, I would go with #1 if you want it to be running games that are current gen.

EDIT: However if you can find one with similar price and specs that has a CPU speed higher than 2.2ghz, you might want to go for that because a dual-core 2.2 is not as powerful as it used to be...(currently running 3.2 quad on my desktop)

I thought the same re the screens. Isn't the i7 a quad core however?

i7 is just a quality-category for intel, there are 2,4,and 6 core models. However, I actually just assumed you meant dual-core for some reason but you didn't list the model number so I don't know which it is.

Ah, I checked the model is a quad. I'll edit the OP to include it.

If you're getting an i7, just remember to also get good ram and video card because right now my laptop has an i7 which I can't use to its full potential because the rest of my laptop is average.

I wouldn't get either.

Why not get one with an i5 and a better GPU? I always see i7's as overkill.

If I HAD to choose one I would go with #2 as having a higher res with a worse GPU is just going to cause problems, gaming will be better on #2.
#2 has a lower res... and a worse GPU.

I did think that but the only laptops I can find with a better GPU are still way out of my price range even with an i5.
