1 for me. I think it had the best story, pacing and antagonist.

Plus it ranks as my favorite game of AHL TIMEZ!
Agreed, ME1 had the best story and bad guy (Kai Leng was terrible) even if the combat was outdated.

ME3 has best combat and gameplay though while ME2 has the best music IMO.

ME 1 for the story, exploration with true roaming, and characters. I hated every single new character in ME 2 and 3. My ME 2 playthrough in anticipation of 3 had only Garrus, Tali, Legion alive. I also didn't get any of the DLC for 2. 2 also stole my romantic interest away (Liara), and I lost any desire to continue on that character. By the time Lair came out, I'd forgotten the game.

Mass Effect 1 is still my favorite.
Mako, all classes have grenades, and a more general feeling of FUCK YEAH!

Then Mass Effect 3. Because it really was a beautiful game until the very end.

And Mass Effect 2 comes in last...because it isn't as replayable for me as the others and has the hammerhead, and it felt more railroaded, but it had more areas to deviate from the paragon/renegade track. It wasn't as obvious what was good and what led to stupidity besides the final mission.

This is something I've thought about before. If the Mako scenes were improved a little bit, along with the inventory system and the combat... it'd probably be the best game I've ever played.

I enjoyed the Mako bits, though I know they were horribly flawed and pretty bad. If they did it like the bits in the Overlord and Firewalker DLCs for ME2, it'd be great.

There we go then: Remake ME1 with the combat, graphics and item mechanics etc. of ME3, and the vehicle sections and side-quest scale and depth of ME2's DLCs.

2 had my favourite characters and story so 2 followed by 3 and then 1. 1 is one of my favourite games of all time but 3 was pitch perfect aside from that ending.

ME3 had the best combat, and the Tuchanka part of the game was awesome. However the rest of the game was rushed and awful.

ME2 had the best characters.

But nothing compares to the general experience that was ME1. I really enjoyed it, all aspects of it, it felt like a refined KoTOR. I loved it.

I think, maybe, we've reached the point where anyone who really wanted to play Mass Effect 3 has already played it.
I did not read the rest of your post, for incredibly obvious reasons. It's only been a few weeks since its release, do NOT assume this stupidly. I'm currently playing it and it's going to be literally months before new sales of such a hugely popular game die off.

The phrase "way to be a dick, bro" comes to mind. I did say "I think" and "maybe" insinuating that I may be wrong, no reason to start getting all pissy about it.

I want to say the first. With an original setting I absolutely adored, an awesome crew line-up, great antangonist, amazing dialogue best story of the series and incredible music it blows almost everything I have played out of the water.

However, everything came together so damn well in sequel. Gameplay, music and structure were better, even if the overall story-arc was lackluster and the recruitable NPC were almost too many. I can't look back at the first time I played Mass Effect 2 without starry-eyed nostalgia and admiration, even if the first and second kin of melts into one single experience since I played them so closely (Bought Mass Effect on experiment and found it so bloody magnificient I went out and bought the sequel immediately after finishing the first one).

For me, it's:

ME3 > ME1 > ME2

Not that I dislike ME2. Not by a long shot. But I think ME3 took a lot of good cues from both of its predecessors to make it the best game in my opinion (even though... yes, like many others, I hated the ending). ME1, though, had an amazing feel to it. It's the sort of thing that you can't quite quantify... that feeling that a whole new world was opening up to you... really, really amazing. What took this down for me was the gameplay elements. While I liked the Mako for making the galaxy feel huge, driving it was like trying to ride a particularly stubborn elephant while you were blindfolded.

I liked many elements of mass effect and it is still my favorite but some elements of that game were tedious. The constant land roaming was annoying but was not improved by removing it altogether. The swapping out bits of equipment constantly was also annoying but that was not improved either by removing the variety of mods and different armors either. Customizing your squad mates armor was neat and having icy rounds on the sniper was cool no pun intended. The different models and animations for the later weapons was also nice. Whilst they did improve on mass effect in mass effect 2 it's not the way I would have done it.

I'm going with ME2 because you could get Grunt and Legion as team mates and ME3 really disappointed me when I found out you can't get any krogan on your team.

Mass Effect 1: Amazing story, shitty gameplay.
Mass Effect 2: Above average story, above average gameplay.
Mass Effect 3: Amazing story with shitty ending, pretty good gameplay.

Mass Effect 3 wins by far.

Yay Mass Effect 1 is winning! :D

It is my favourite because it had fun combat(not like other dice roll rpgs), a good story, equipment management(love that), giant (if not a little barren) places to explore, and was scifi (something rare in games, I find).

Mass Effect 2 changed direction and it killed me inside. I don't understand why they changed it so drastically, they could have easily tweaked some things and it would have been fine.

Mass Effect 3 has been beaten to death, then revived and beaten to death some more, so I won't talk about that one.

Edit: Lol just realized it was necro'd.

hmm, hard question, would be 1 or 2 simply because those 2 made me want to buy number 3 but I did enjoy 3 as well so I really don't know the only bit which stood out as driving me nuts was the stupid planet scanning. That was just dumb so I guess that means my vote goes to 1 but not by much

ME2. I played that one the most (I had one playthrough of 40 hours, I'm still not sure how I managed to do that) and I got the most fun out of it. I also think it was a timing thing as with 2 I was still excited off the back of 1 but then burnt myself out on 2 so when 3 came out I was on auto-pilot in terms of the series as a whole and playing them.
the other two are brilliant as well but personal experience forces me to go with 2.

EDIT:

1000th POST! WE DID YOU GUYS!

I'd like to thank my main man, the big guy always watching over me, Yeezus, in the nam of da fatha, North and sipin' on the holy spirits.

I'm looking at ME3 as the best.(I'm taking all DLC into account in my opinions)

ME1 was good, and the weapons systems were easy to break(pair of frictionless and your weapons will never overheat), but the exploration left a great deal to be desired. The tank was frustrating and, while amusing in the story missions, both it and everything else about planetary exploration turned tedious. The inventory system was largely a crap shot of finding 300 useless guns/mods/armor before you found a decent upgrade with everything else getting turned into omnigel for opening locks.

ME2 changed the gun system and revamped the classes, all for the better in my opinion, but dear god, having to grind out resources through scanning got old. Early nods to what you'd done in the first game were nice, as was the improved quest and journal system.

ME3 took everything from 2 and expanded on it. Multiplayer was nice, as was the expanded arsinal you had access to. The story was brought to a nice conclusion when it was all said and done, plus there was payoff for everything you'd done up to that point. The only major complaint I could think of was that they didn't show enough of the major battles.
