I'm trying to decide between the original Metroid game and Super Metroid and was wondering which I should get. I've never played either so I wanted the opinion of people who have played them. Which should I get?

Super. Easily. Its probably the best side-scrolling adventure game ever, and Metroid on the Nes hasnt aged very well. However, there is an enhanced remake on the Gba called zero mission, which is well worth the price of admission. But if you had to pick one, id pick Super Metroid.

I'll be straight with this one, I honestly do not like the original Metroid at all. I hate that its fucking challenge just to hit an enemy, and I hate that its a maze that gives no indication of where to go. Metroid: Zero Mission(a GBA remake) however is one of my favorite games ever.

I completely and utterly agree with you on that, I do not like the original version, but Zero Mission is one of my all time favorite Metroid games.

Super Metroid is tough, but it is an amazing game. I love the game, it's incredibly fun and it's worth playing over and over again.

Super hands down, as others have said the original has not aged well and you're better off with Zero Mission if you really want to play the original that bad.

If you're only going to get one then definitely go for Super Metroid. It improved on the original in virtually every aspect

Super metroid is the better choice. However, the GBA remake of Metroid; Metroid Zero Mission is very fun, and if you finish it, you can play the original metroid on your gameboy.

Super Metroid, without question. The original game was solid, but suffers many basic gameplay issues which make it nigh-unplayable in this day and age; notably, the inability to crouch down and shoot at small enemies which are below your normal line of fire. By comparison, the SNES classic is one of those games which nailed just about everything perfectly; it's a frequent contender for "Best Game of All Time" despite its age.

A more even match-up would be Super Metroid vs Metroid Prime (the first of the trilogy/mini-series/whatever, on the Gamecube). Even then, the verdict still leans slightly towards the SNES title; Prime was an outstanding game, but Super Metroid is damned-near perfect.
