So, my birthday is coming up and I'm in desperate need of an upgrade in the handheld department. My only handheld is an original Nintendo DS (The one that was released in like 2004) with no internet connectivity. But my birthday is coming up and I'm thinking of asking for a new one. If I don't get it I'll still have a substantial amount of money. So anyway I'm debating weather or not to get a DSi, DS Lite or 3DS. Here's what I'm considering.

I mainly want this for Pokemon, Pokemon has been pretty much the only game I've played on my DS and on handhelds in general. However not having internet connections means I'm constantly missing out on event Pokemon as well as the game getting boring after I beat the main story due to my inability to participate in Wi-Fi battles. However I'd be willing to try other games. It's because of this reason that I'm considering an upgrade to a simple lite rather than shelling out for a 3DS that I won't be using much of the features for. So what do you think Escapist?
Also, if I could somehow get my old-ass DS connected to the internet it'd eliminate the need for a new one but this doesn't seem likely.

Considering you want one right away I'd go with DS lite. 3DS is still a little pricey though it is picking up speed in the library department. It doesn't however have any pokemon exclusives yet (Black and white and apparently Black and white 2 are ds) which you say you play a lot. However if you feel that you don't want to miss out on a lot of the new stuff that is coming out very fast for 3ds go for it if you have the money.

If you can get one, get a 3DS. If not, get a DSi. The 3DS is around $150-200, while the DSi and DS Lite are both around $100-120. There's no real point to getting a DS Lite since a DSi costs the same.

I also recommend not buying used if you can avoid it.

Seeing how the 3DS and the DSlite are backwards compatible I'd get one of those, I'd rather have a system that plays two gens instead of one. Then it comes down to future games, do you want to pay more for the 3DS and be able to buy the games coming out for it or save money on the DSlite and be limited to older games and the few trickling releases?

If I were you I'd ask for a 3DS and if I get money instead buy a DSlite.

My birthday is coming up soon as well, 25 of May.

What I am going to do is wait until E3 which occurs some time early June. I should be able to survive until then! I will be looking out for a new 3DS rendition which will hopefully clear up some of its downsides such as the relatively short battery life. If no new rendition of the 3DS appears, I will purchase the current one.

There will no doubt be a Pokemon game for the 3DS within the year.

3DS is a much better investment, seeing as you've got access to the entire back catalog of DS games as well as any new releases.

I've got all 3 (Don't ask why, I'm not sure.) I'd say the DSi is the best one overall, including price and features. I only have one 3DS game, LoZ, and there aren't any coming out soon that I plan on getting.

Since you intend to play online, just don't get the DS lite (so either up to you with DSi or 3DS).
The DS Lite has a troublesome way to access online which involce a WEP Key (unless you are using that) as oppose to simply type in your password to your router into the handheld.

I would say 3DS, because it means you have access to the entire DS back catalogue, and also allows for any 3DS exclusive Pokemon games if they bring any out for it (more than likely)

However, the 3DS (and the DSi as well I believe) does not have a GBA slot so if you are wanted to do the whole "specific GBA game in" that a couple of the games have, then you may want to keep the original DS handy as well.
