Poll: Which Resident Evil game is considered the best?

It used to be RE2, which built on everything cool about the first one and expanded on it although lately I'd have to go with RE4. It's just.. really fun to play. Especially on the wii since you can aim the actual gun now with the wiimote. There is nothing more satisfying than solving quirky puzzles and blasting zombies with a precision aimed shotgun to the face XD

3, 2, and then Outbreak.

After those games, they became more about action and big set pieces rather than survival or horror. 4 was actually my least favorite of the series because there weren't any survival elements, but I still enjoyed it.

EDIT: Code Veronica was also really good, but underrated as hell. It wasn't so much about horror(until the bandersnatches came around), but had survival elements with action to boot.

My vote goes to Resident Evil 4. I got it for the Wii and man did I love it, still probably my favorite game on the system. The originals aren't really my style of game, way to clunky for taste. As for 5 and 6, well yeah we see how those went.

I don't know how in the world it never happened, but I never played the fourth game. So, that's one reason I won't be putting that game as 'the best RE game' because I simply haven't experienced it. I've got fond memories of RE2 and I'd probably chalk that up as being the best one I've played, but damn . . . that game really didn't age too well. A few months back, I played it once more at my brother in-laws house and I must say, the controls are fucking terrible. Really fucking terrible. We all go on about what a masterpiece it was, but you know what? I bet if we re-released it for sixty dollars and the game still had its terrible camera and its god awful controls then I'm pretty sure it would get terrible reviews. 'It's a horror game!' Is not a good excuse for terrible controls. Bad controls and bad angles in a video game is equivalent to justifying a character being a complete fucking moron in a horror movie. It does nothing to immerse me in the movie, it just annoys me.

I used to love RE2, I was batshit crazy about it, same with RE3. And I'll always remember my time with them fondly...

But then the series evolved beyond prerendered backgrounds and static camera angles, and we got the superior-in-every-way RE4.

None of the other games really even hold a candle to RE4. I haven't actually played RE6 though because it just doesn't look very good. Judging by everyone's response to it, I'm right.

I am partial to the classic style of Resident Evil. I think the gamecube remake of Resi1 was the best. Resident Evil 3 is a close second because it lets you roam through the city. The first 10 minutes of Resident Evil 2 are motherfucking brilliant as well.

I second this. Though it is the only resi evil game I've ever played, but this one I enjoyed. It had good graphics (for the time) and suitably creepy atmosphere. Also, ammo and herbs were thin on the ground, so it still felt like survival horror. I remember going down into one of the crypts to fight one of the midgame bosses with 1 herb and practically no ammo. That was tense.

Of course, none of them were a patch on Eternal Darkness...

Resident Evil 0 was my favorite, followed by Code Veronica X. I do think RE4 is great, though. I had/have it for Gamecube, PS2, and XBOX 360, so I can't say I don't love it.

operation Racoon city then Survivor then Four. Yes I just pulled that list out of my arse ok im not a huge resi fan well playing anyway I like to watch others play them I just cant get the hang of the old controls 4 was great fun to watch and play for me, while 2 was my favourite in the old style its just I found it unplayable others certainly didnt though.
