So, I've been really depressed lately and figured I should try something to take my mind off of everything. I thought an RPG might do the trick. I listed off 8 of them in a poll. The first two I've never played, the next three I've started, but had difficulty getting into, and the last three I've beat before, but they're favorites and I figured I could give them another go.

A quick disclaimer on KotOR, my laptop would be the device I'd play it on, and I'm not sure if the touchpad thing is appropriate to play such a game. Also, I have KotOR II that I can play afterwords which I've never played before.

yeah the touchpad will be a non issue mostly, the combat makes it so it goes at your pace.

and OP you have kotor II and haven't played it?!?!

good list dood

i have a lot of love for Valkyrie Profile, so start with that i guess
but really not gonna go wrong with any you pick
Yeah, the list is based off of games I've been playing, want to play, and favorites. I've been wanting to try out the Valkyrie Profile series and have all three games (That includes the DS spin-off and the PSP port of the first), I just haven't got around to it. Seems that I have absolutely nothing to do with myself right now, so might as well take a crap at the backlog.

If it makes things better, I've only had KotOR II for a few months. And, I got the PC version of the first game only a month or so ago.

you sir, have excellent taste in RPGs

if you can getta hold of em, Lufia 2 (NOT the DS remake, the SNES version, the remake sucks) and the PS1 Lunar remakes, as well as Break of Fire 1-4, (1 an 2 have been ported to the GBA and 3 is on the PSP as PAL import so shouldn't have an issue there)

I've heard the Lufia remake is pretty good, just different, but I haven't played either so I wouldn't know. There aren't any Lunar or Breath of Fire games in my collection either. I'm always on the lookout for stuff like that, though, so if I see them and have some extra cash, I might pick them up.

i will admit taris (the first planet) is a bit of a ***** to get through, it's basically the worst part of the whole game (hell there are mods dedicated to allowing you to skip taris and get all the xp/goodies/decisions) so that isn't a super surprise there.

once you kick off from that first planet though it really gets rolling and you have clear choices on what to do/where to go

Well, Super Mario RPG has no exceedingly sad parts. I would say Chrono Trigger, but...parts of it are sad :( So, my vote is SMRPG.

The World Ends With You is Freakin amazing, but...if you want to cure depression, go with Mario RPG. It's cute, funny, and really fun. Go for it.

..But go play TWEWY later!

All of them are truly excellent, but for me, KOTOR takes the cake. Its worth playing just to play the second one which is one of the best games of all time IMO.

hah yeah, i mean don't take my 100% word for it, i don't want to be burned at the stake later for that last statement there, but it does get alot better once you leave taris (pro tip: don't level up on taris, let your party do the work once you get your party members and save your experience for the right moment after taris (don't want to ruin much, but you'll know what i mean when it happens)) and head out, it's a bit linear at first but it mostly is just them setting up the story for the rest of the game and then you are off to do what ever you want to your hearts content.

Sometimes I get lucky finds in pawn shops, garage sales, flea markets, etc. I go to them with my mom quite often. But, yeah, pretty much any classic PS1 or SNES RPG will set you back quite a bit. Earthbound eludes me so...

I'd go with Kotor, but touchpad might be a problem. Not a big problem since you can (and are encouraged to) pause the game every time you issue commands, though. Easy solution would be to buy a shit mouse whenever you get 10 bucks.

From your list, I assume you're a bigger JRPG fan than I am, so if Kotor's touchpad controls are bad, I'd go with Valkyrie Profile. That's the first game I buy when I get a new PSP. The original PSOne game was great.

Edit: On second thought, Valkyrie Profile might not be the best choice if you're feeling depressed; it's a very melancholic game. I haven't played any other games on your list, but I've been meaning to pick up TWEWY for ages. I hear it's really good.

Out of the list I'd go for Knights of the Old Republic. I played it recently using a laptop trackpad and it didn't affect gameplay at all. However, this may be because I like to autopause when going into a fight to issue commands.
