There's the past. In which you know the settings and what's gonna happen

Then there's the present. Where you can relate to the people and world events.

Finally the future. Where you can guess what has happened between now and then.

It really depends on the game itself. As long as everything fits into place any time zone can work.

You need a don't care choice, which is exactly what I'll be saying. "Don't care"

To me it doesn't really matter what time zone a game is set in, as long as the game itself is good.

Then again if you were to push me to choose one. Then I would say future, I enjoy seeing creative technology.

Alternate reality is a little vague isn't it? It could be anything.

Anyway, I picked the past, stuff like Oblivion and Fable. That... almost counts as the past.

I like the present. I like being able to relate to the characters and the world I'm playing in. Like Uncharted.

Also, an alternate reality can be good too, like slightly futuristic but still modern. Like Final Fantasy VIII (had my favourite setting in a Final Fantasy game).

Whatever works with the story. history, alternate history, the present, twenty minutes into the future, the present in another version of reality, a far away world with no relation to our own, and the future, utopian or otherwise all work depending on the story, the setting, and all the other elements. So long as you're not trying to strain for realism in the victorian age and give someone a lazer gun, it's not really an issue.
