A worrying number of people picked Riften. Good luck with surviving and all that stuff, heh... heh...
I thought this about Riften too when I began playing. That and Markarth. I despised the places because of the things that happened behind the scenes and all the nasty backstabbing people that lived there.

But after a while Riften grew on me. The vast majority of the people that live there are actually decent people and are really grateful for the help I've given them. I have partnered up with Mjoll the Lioness and we often patrol to make sure no dodgy dealings are going down.

Besides, The Rift is my favourite hold. The scenery is beautiful around there.

Markarth is my favorite. I love the Reach.

Riften, Morthal, and Falkreath are also nice. (Yes, I like the darker towns.)

Either Whiterun or Solitude, since they seem like the safer, more interesting towns. Probably Whiterun, since that's where my character opted to live, plus housing is cheaper and the town itself is prettier to look at. Besides those two, Riften's a complete shithole, Markarth (and the Reach in general) runs too much risk of my being murdered by psychos, Windhelm's full of insufferable racists, and I've barely been to Morthal or Falkreath.

I know Im a bit late to this thread but I've been too busy playing the game (and loving it) to see things like this...I actually just re-started the game cause I was feeling froggy...I think that it would have been nice if you could have occupied, protected and decorated a cabin in the middle of no where--I killed someone who was located to the northwest of Whiterun and his house was the shit-back to a cliff, 2 stories, small farm plot...I would love a larger house than Whiterun has to offer (i cant turn around without knocking something over)and I cant really stand the attitude in most of the towns-I like Windhelms house but honestly the town needs an enema-In conclusion, Ima go with Helgen-plenty of cheap real estate, quiet, nice view... :)

Winterhold or Dawnstar. Probably Winterhold, assuming I could use magic, too.

Although, the large number of dragon attacks would be bad.

Markarth.

Since playing Morrowind, I absolutely love delving into ruins. Also love dwemer stuff in general, so... heck, living in an ancient dwemer city replete with waterfalls is a dream. Also, having a subterranean dwelling would be nice to ward off the cold a bit.

As for the city's behind-the-scene "issues"... eh, in a way, I kinda feel for the forsworn. They're savages at heart, but really, they're also the subjugated natives of the area. :< I'm just gonna assume the Dovahkiin blazed his trail through, and all that's dealt with. :p

If I could truly have my way, though, I'd be a Khajiit, and be a guard in one of my bretheren's trade caravans. Cold days, cold nights, but we would have each other... and skooma. Skooma is good, too. :3

Probably Whiterun. It's been a while since I've played, so it's the only one I really remember being in, but I do know that I really enjoyed the place and my decked out Breezehome (that's the name of the house you can but there, right?).
