I would also like to know how many of the people who choose "Ninja" actual did research beyond Hollywood. Or for that mattter at least watched the show that featured the Ninja.

Knight, heavy armour on a destrier charging right at you. Yeah, you now look like a butterfly on a pin, except messier.
Mind you depending on the era the apaches might have guns. Combine that with their guerilla tactics and they have a step up on pretty much everyone else.
I really think each group excells at completely diffferent things so its hard to compare.
Apaches are ambushers par-excellence.
Roman legions have masterful coordination and tactics.
Knights have the power of heavy armour and are the only real cavalry group in the list.
Ninjas are assassins, and thus not really suited for large face to face conflicts.
Pirates are like the Apaches except on the high seas.
Samurai have a strong warrior culture that focusses on loyalty (depending on the era anyway)
Spartans are actually pretty close to samurai but with different gear. (mostly with heavier shields)
And vikings were a pretty good blend between pirate and apache, as they used their seafaring supremacy to attack unsuspecting land targets.
