My friends and I were having a conversation in our tutor room in school today and somehow the discussion got onto music. I commented about how Coldplay songs always sound relatively depressive, My friend then said that Metallica was a more "emo" (as we were putting it) band. My other friend agreed with me and another friend agreed with the "other party". So I decided to put it to the escapist to vote for us! :] (By emo we meant depressive and about depressing subjects just you you guys know.)

Well, Coldplay has more of a sad atmosphere, I guess. It's kind of hard to be depressed right after a cool guitar solo...

Neither band is really depressing though. Look up Doom Metal and all it's wonderful sub-genres.

Coldplay is just so boring they get depressing. Metallica on the other hand as a whole is not really "emo" as some may put it but like most groups there's always one song that has an emotional drive behind it.

Metallica is "emo", who knew? That's just, well, slightly silly.

Emo music to me is stuff like Bullet for my Valentine, not.. thrash metal...

As for Coldplay, slightly maybe, but there are far worse offenders, Metallica just ain't one of them.

Hmm...

I'd say that Metallica is just better at conveying emotions, so songs like 'Fade to Black' and 'Nothing Else Matters' can have a very melancholy feel, while songs like 'Fuel' and 'Seek & Destory' just reek of... Well... Awesome?.. Dunno.

However, Coldplay really only have one tone, and that is the standard boyband moan, and as such, I would dub them the more emo band.
