Each should pay for the date half the time. First time guy, second time girl, etc. This removes any sense of obligation on either side: man not obligated to pay all the time, woman not obligated to provide anything in return for man paying all the time.

I've heard going Dutch described as wishy-washy, the argument being if you can't step up and say "I like you and I'm willing to drop sixty bucks on dinner and a movie to prove it" then you don't deserve a date. But the woman should be able to say that as readily as the man.

Well with me and my boyfriend he usually pays but only because he won't let me :p First date should be 50/50 or whoever did the asking then take turns after that. Whoever goes first is up to the couple.

The more masculine person.

Or, the one with the bigger metaphorical balls.

Whomever extended the invitation should be the one paying. The invitee should bring a little bit to help cover if something goes wrong. It's stupid to be like, Hey wanna go somewhere? Okay but you pay.

I've 'tried' to pay before, and the guy grabs it pretty fast. I'll pay for my meal, I don't mind. Especially if I was the one who wanted a bite to eat.

But now I'm married, and he still wont let me pay.lol

The guy should usually pay. Not always, though, especially if the girl makes more money or it's the guy's birthday or things like that. It's a very good way to make a good impression on a girl. However, girls should always come prepared to pay for themselves and should always offer. I always abide by that because I don't want to be a total mooch.

I will usually offer, however I think it's kinda silly that the girl should be able to assume the guy will pay for her. I'm actually very for the whole idea of people paying for what they buy, regardless of their gender.

The women is generally expected to pay in other, physical ways. As it has been said elsewhere, it is often much easier for women to get sex from a guy than a guy to get sex from a woman. So, the man foots the bill, and the woman takes one for the team :)P)

This is just a generalization explanation.

Dumpster diving!

But seriously, formal dates where you pay for food and stuff? Those sound awkward. I'm a girl and I don't feel comfortable with the thought of someone paying for me (throwing the "girlfriend's are expensive" myth away), unless I knew it would even out some time in the future because I'd buy them something too. I'd rather just pay for myself or just split the bill so it's roughly even.

But I think if you're comfortable with someone paying for you on a date, it's not unreasonable to expect them to pay if they're the one who asks you out somewhere. They shouldn't pressure a girl to go with them to somewhere, basically asking her spend all her money getting to know him.

whoever it is that manages to bring a wallet, if both parties forget the wallet, then they are to exit at a casual saunter, confident that the theft has gone undetected.

My rule is whoever proposes the date should pay if its a proper romance date. If not, just pay for youselves.

Ideally, we'd pay an amount relative to our respective income brackets- if I, making $50,000 a year, am forced by dating laws to wholly supply meals to my date, herself earning $100,000 a year, surely something is quite wrong.

It's just a stupid, sexist holdover from when Women were incapable of making any real money in a man's world- it's supposedly an equal world, now, so it's time we push actual equality. Quite apposed to the common belief, Women are not made of glass.

Otherwise is sexist. If they want equality, they've fucking got it.

Depending on the circumstances, that's prostitution or rape. I wouldn't call that an ideal solution.

I vote other: Whoever proposed the date. After a bit of dating, the couple can discuss who pays.

The guy should offer to pay or just grab the check when it comes, but if the girl wants to pay for half or what she ate then he should respect her wishes and let her. I don't think it's sexist to assume as the guy that you'll pay, but it is sexist to refuse to allow her to pay if she really wants to.

I pay for the first one, then we generally start switching who pays date by date. Of course, whenever it's her turn to pay we usually go to a cheaper place cause I still have some sense of machismo.

That being said, I don't mind paying, but I like being treated too.

It's pretty traditional for the guy to be the one with the money and thus the one who pays and the woman to be the housewife that takes care of the kids.

Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, but these days I don't think it's nearly as common as it used to be and thus splitting the bill makes sense to me unless the pair isn't necessarily balanced monetarily.

Well, its called dating too. I dont remember which, but either Family Guy or King of the Hill made that comment too basically. But what I said has been the general rule for a long time.
