Poll: Who really wants a new console?

I agree with you. There doesn't seem to be anything the current consoles can't handle that isn't just graphics (Wii not included).

However, I'm bored of my consoles and don't plan on getting another console barring something I haven't gotten any version of yet (like a PSP), so it's up to you guys.

Edit: I'll get a new console when they release something that actually advances gaming, like advanced AI that generates custom maps/storylines/dialogue for a game every time you play (as opposed to more power/new control systems that do what we already can).

I'm 100% a PC gamer, and don't own any consoles, but that said, every single advancement is better. Better console technology means console owner can enjoy better games (Hey, good for them!), and since it's now apparent that the old PC->Console port method has changed to Console->PC port, it's probably that it'd also mean better looking (If not neccesarily better playing) games for the PC as well, so yeah. Go for it.

Except, designers... don't spend the first 5 years of the next generation trying to show off good graphics, then spend 1 year actually focusing on good GAMES, and move on to the next, please.

Also, it would give modern game development a push, allowing them to advance beyond the boundaries currently set by the console limitations.

What exactly are those boundaries? Excluding even higher end graphics, what boundaries are the current consoles presenting us as gamers that you feel a more powerful console system would be able to over come?

You're not the only one, sadly.

It's baffling how many think it's worth paying hundreds of dollars for some visual effects, less loading times, longer development cycles, less innovation, etc.

If they're willing to push the AI and physics as much as graphics, it would be nice, but the budgets would skyrocket, so it's not likely to happen.

A new generation of consoles means higher resolution, more RAM and less games/more expensive games for not much more fun or wow factor.

That's what happens when the majority of a community is children who's consoles are paid for by their parents as well as having zero grasp of what constitutes a game's development process, quality, and cost. Looking through the thread, the vast majority of those Yes responses are followed by "So the graphics can catch up to PC gaming" or corporate buzz words like "So it can push gaming forward" or "break boundaries." Of course, none of them actually can quantified what pushing forward or breaking boundaries means, outside of graphical quality, which tells me that all the slavering hordes want is shinier games, regardless of their cost or quality since they have no concept of either.

On principle, I think that a new console generation would be good, new hardware and all that. That being said, I'm a poor college student and was lucky to get my 360, so I'd really hope that it remains viable for a long time to come

Finances. I'f prefer if there was not a new console generation until I'm finished uni. That being said, I can always do what I did when the 360 launched (PS3 came out like 18 months after the 360 in Australia).

I have to ask, what is being held back? Where are these horribly made, antiquated PS3 and 360 games that are dragging the entire industry down? People keep using this "holding it back" or "needs to push forward" as the reasons we need a new console gen, but not one person has been able to define what "holding it back" means beyond even higher graphical performance which has basically reached the crest of how good games can get without taking 10 years and billions of dollars to make.

I don't get this, people ***** about games having shit AI and framerate issues then staunchly oppose any technological advancement saying "shit's fine for another 2 years, I'm cool with it".

Examples? And I mean examples of big name releases where the AI and framerate has been contributed to the the mechanical limitations of the consoles and not just shitty, half-assed development or small budget titles that couldn't afford to do better.

I want new consoles to come out for no other reason than I feel like my computer gaming has been held back due to the age of current consoles. I am not an elitist, I simply can not afford both a computer and a console, so I chose the computer since I need one anyway.

I'm in no rush, though. And I understand putting them off, especially for Microsoft and Sony. I do, however, agree with Nintendo's decision to launch the Wii U this year.

I already have all of the current gen consoles.
When I said I wouldn't be able to afford new consoles, I literally meant new consoles. Still though, that is one good aspect of a new gen, at least for those who want to get a PS3 or a 360 and haven't yet.

How about video?). By the end, you get about 200-300mb of RAM to work with. When you're dealing with high resolution graphics, the fact that developers have been able to render so much on the X360 is amazing at best.

Heck, the GPU has 500 mhZ of processing power. GPUs at release for cards in the PC were already at the 1.0 ghZ by that time (I can't remember, that was a while ago).

It's been long enough. The consoles have pretty much reached their limits on graphical capability and the like. We can proceed to the next stage, there is no point in purposely delaying it. Developers are relying on "trickery" to keep the illusion of progression (Locking framerate to 30 and narrowing the FOV for example) and some games have suffered for it (PS3 version of skyrim being the most obvious one).

I'm going on wikipedia for this as the time between "generations". From the first generation according to wikipedia (I am gonna start from the Magnavox oddesey, and these are rough, you can probably give or take a year, especially depending on your region):

1972 > 1976 > 1983 > 1988 > 1993 > 1998 > 2005 (starting from the wii)

The Wii U is probably going to be released in 2012, although wikipedia claims that the Nintendo 3DS is the first console of the 8th generation, but we're talking about the big consoles. It's about this time where the consoles should have been released, not announced.

In regards to price. Consoles have always costed a lot of money when they first come out, and then reduce in price over time until they are dirt cheap.

But since I play on the PC I don't care, I don't have to spend tons of money on a new console I can just buy some new parts whenever a game becomes too hard to run on my computer which would probably cost a little less.

EDIT: Also, for people saying they wouldn't be able to buy due to finances:

The sooner it comes out, the sooner it will drop to a price where you are willing to buy, and the more games that will become available.

No. I don't want a new generation just yet. We can still squeeze more power out of the consoles. Just because Nintendo are finally joining this generation with... whatever the hell the WiiU is, doesn't mean everyone should start shoving the bandwagon out even further. I'd like a few more years, then I'll embrace a new generation with open arms.

Also; I thought Sony promised a 10 year cycle for the PS3? It's only been 6 so far. Does that mean we get 2 more years of great support (and, if the PS2 is any indication, 2 of the best) before the final 2 years are left to EA Sports support and WWE games?

If they make new consoles with a proper backwards compatibility (none of this download patch or ?we chose only a select few to run?) then I?m for it. As with this generation, the launch titles are usually tame and could have been released on the previous console and/or are generally crap. if I?m going to invest in a new console I want to play my old games on it to tide me over until some good games come out for it.

Also I?d be surprised if Microsoft announces a new this year, I would have expected them to hold Halo 4 for it.

I'm 100% for being at the forefront of technology. I want games that I can't tell the difference between it and real life. I want it to be an immersive, encapsulating and fun storytelling experience. Obviously we are years away from anything close, but progress will only bring us closer.

My fears are exactly what they were with the last console generation. Xbox pushed a system that hadn't been fully tested (red ring) and sony arrogantly thought that they were untouchable (600 price tag). I've lost all hope for a decent system in Nintendo with their focus on children/bulk masses, and will not be picking that up. With the announcement of a new Xbox (and possibly Playstation, though I've heard rumors of Sony not debuting a new console), I have to ask; why? Why do we need another console? I've become accustomed to the way my Xbox360 works and do not look forward to having to upgrade to the new Xbox(720?). Maybe I'm just the odd man out on this issue, but I feel like so much more could be done with the current technology.

By the way, a lot of this comes from my hatred of Kinect, and for some reason I feel that the new Xbox will use a lot of the motion feature, which would be a deal breaker for me.

So, what do you want? The current generation, or the next?

There's only so much that can be done with the current generation and we are very close to the limits. The PS3 in particular had a poor GPU (let mainly down by a horrific lack of dedicated memory) and a very limiting amount of main memory that leaves the otherwise beastly processor with nothing to do.

New generations are good, but to be honest consoles don't excite me anyway, I'm more of a PC guy and any gaming I feel like kicking back and doing just gets done on my phone/tablet, especially now that GTA 3 is out.

Incorrect, the GPU core clock for many main stream graphics cards back in Q1 2007 were between 500 and 600 MHz. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-video-cards-money,1558-4.html

The memory clock for same graphics cards, however, were between 1500 and 2000 MHz effective rate. Something the RSX was also in line with.
