Why did Hitler attack Russia?

I have heard he attacked because they were planning on attacking him, or in defense, and I have also heard he just wanted to beat them.

Though, we all must agree that if he hadn't battled with Russia he would have won World War II.

I'm pretty sure that if he didn't attack Russia he stil would have lost. Most of the world didn't really like him. So, he attacked them because HE'S HITlER!

Well the combined might or the Allies may have won, but there's no denying the massive help that the Russians gave; they were also the ones that liberated many of the concentration camps.

I figure it was offence. Hitler promised a massive German empire, and was expanding on all side he probably just considered Russia one more country.

If he attacked it's offense.

But as to the other question of why did he do it, well that's because he was hitler and nobody would stop him.

Because he was Hitler?

Hitler didn't do things 'because he was Hitler.'

Yes, I meant or.

You can attack defensively....
If we're talking about military action, then it's offence.
The question is did he attack BECAUSE Russia was planning on attack him soon, or because he wanted to take over Russia.

I was pointing out that the actual question was worded paradoxically.

Russia and Germany had a non-aggression treaty at the start of the war. However, Hitler just hated Stalin to the bone (to a lesser extent communists). Hitler wanted a swift take over of at least the European USSR; he didn't really expect so much resistance, but took some very strategic and economic places (like Ukraine). In the end of the offensive Hitler took over most of western USSR by December 1941. However, the turning point came when Hitler wanted to destroy Stalin and take away was the egotist Stalin valued most. This is why Hitler didn't try to take the oil fields before going after Stalingrad. Otherwise the Russians would have been screwed (and maybe the rest of the world). The battle of Stalingrad was the turning point of the war since a good portion of Hitler's forces were attacking Stalingrad and Hitler gave orders to stay in Stalingrad until it is captured or you die. After that the Russians took back the USSR and continued west. So remember: Britain gave time, The US gave money, and the Russians gave blood. [/history lesson]

Yep, this being the man who said the quickest way to end troubles in India would have been to shoot Ghandi.

He probably though that a fast attack would have easily broken Russia(who weren't really in the war yet).
But it didn't...

War between Germany and Russia was inevitable. Germany decided to strike first before Russia could fully mobilise.

He was crazy.
He was fully convinced of Germany's absolute superiority.
He got blinded by his mad ideas.

I'm of the opinion that Hitler was insane, Kefka style. Effective. Dangerous. Insane. Probably paranoid too.
