Anyway...
They explode because Notch made them explode.
It's either that or everyone's computers are conspiring against us to destroy our marvellous creations.
That, and creepers do not 'exploded'.

If you want an in-game reason: Creepers got annoyed that they failed as being pigs and so decided to use their wonderful abilities to punish anyone who looks even remotely like the being who made them fail.

On topic: from a gameplay point of view they add conflict. It's fine having baddies that kill you so you potentually loose all your stuff but without creepers there's no theat to the things you biult (apart from the odd misplaced lava moat. I burnt down half a biulding yesterday with that mistake).

In game, I dunno, they are actually highly inteligent life forms with a rich and complex history and socity that have thrown off the shackles of possessions and roam the world seeking to convert others to their way of life by any means nessisary.

ok so me and a friend where trying to come up with a reason for creepers exploding and this is what we think: creeper a walking seed pods that spread their seeds by exploding that then form more creepers. what do you think?

ok, you do know this is all just in good fun right? i like to make explanations of the unexplained and/or illogical. it not just minecraft, this is just what me and my friends do when we talk on the bus. so go away troll.

I've always had this one theory about them, and then someone made a mini-fanfic about them which only added to that.

I see creepers as the remains of fallen trees, knowing only the pain of having been chopped down by a human. So they immediately gravitate towards any humans they see in order to destroy them. At this point, they have a pressure imbalance which ignites them and explodes them to fill the offender with spores that will create new trees.

They don't have any hands, so they can't mine, so they have an ever-growing hatred for all the fun the players are having mining away and building stuff. They also happen to be suicidally depressed and also capable of spontanious detonation.

It's obviousss when you think about it.

...Or that. That's pretty damn hilarious! I like it!
