I am a noncognitivist and don't believe that there is any true/false value to moral claims. So I do good for my self-image.

I voted for the real-world reward. Even though it's far from always the case; being good for someone rarely leeds to any form of long-term appreciation.

There's a reason my nicknames are Angel or Mama... I have a tendency to bail mates out when they need it the most without expecting anything back, but I'll admit I get a rush from doing something nice.

Case 1: My best friend had her hours cut dramatically. I went down to her landlord and paid a hundred dollars off her rent that week without telling her.

Case 2: Less impressive, but two nights after I'd met my former boyfriend, he was saying that he literally had no food in the house and it was two days until payday. So I took him to the nearest supermarket and bought him a few days food. Never asked him for anything and I'd only known him two days.

Really? I don't think anything of it. I've been in the situation where I've needed a little help from someone kind, so why not pass the good karma on?

That's my view, anyway...

Because it gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling inside. Also because of my ego. I like it when people percieve me as a good guy. Oh, and also because I have an innate empathy for other living beings. So I'd guess it has many factors making me try to be a somewhat decent human being.

I've no reason to do otherwise, generally. That's not to say that I do the right thing all the time, Or even that I have a clear definition of what "right" is. In fact, when you get right down to it, when is there ever really a clearcut right and wrong path anyway?

Short of that, 'Cause I'm a nice fukkin' guy!

I highly doubt 40% of people here are altruistic. Because if you were doing it for ego or real world reward, wouldn't it make sense to vote for altruism then comment and tell everyone about it? Also I just don't think there are that many selfless people.

Me? I said "shrug" because I don't do that many good deeds, and when I do, it's because I've got nothing better to do or it's not much difficulty on my part or I know they will pay me back/ego. Mixture of everything.

Seeing a lot of people telling us about their anonymous donations and selfless good deeds. Sort of defeats the purpose of "anonymous" when you tell everyone, that's a reward, even if it's not monetary. No shame in it though, it's human nature.

Because I'm no one special. I have no right to make other peoples' lives worse for my own benefit or entertainment.

And besides, long ago, in a faraway place, I discovered the fabled First Rule of Humanity: Don't be a dick.

I don't really. I don't believe in such a solid, absolute concept. Everything is subjective. There are things that are beneficial to myself or others and things that are harmful to myself or others. Once I've concluded on whether an action is more beneficial or more harmful, the action that I should take is a logical, obvious choice.

So, I guess I'm just extremely pragmatic and amoral? Not immoral. Amoral. There is a large difference.

Intentionally causing harm when it doesn't benefit anyone is just illogical and petty. I don't quite understand the motivation behind it.

I don't think there's any ONE reason to do the right thing. There's a degree of altruism for me, I do good things because most of the time...it just feels right. But admittedly, I do think about my ego and I do like the idea of getting a reward etc.

I do what i was raised on, and what i was raised on just happened to be to always to the right thing. so just the way i was raised is my reason i guess.

mainly for no reward, but i also hope it affects my self-image too when i do good things. its nice when people actually know you to be a good person, rather than not know what kind of person you are at all.

I try to do what I believe to be right because it is the right thing to do, so altruism I guess.

I won't even pretend to say that is the only reason every time.

Well I voted the altruism option, but that doesn't mean I constantly give away all my money and spend my free time helping others. I just mean that if a specific situation comes up where I have the opportunity to help someone out without great cost to myself (I'm thinking lending or giving someone some money, helping someone pick up dropped items, giving someone a ride, escorting a hallmate through campus during HvZ, etc.), of course I'd help--I can't imagine that so many of you wouldn't. The only reason I can think of is... I'm not even sure lol, it's just what's right.

i chose the "*shrug* whatever" option, i'll help people if i've got nothing better to do or it's not too much of an effort for me to help them, friends can expect a higher amount of effort from me than the average person i don't know, also for some reason i've got this gentleman's complex that compels me to go to greater lengths for women then i do for men.

so yeah.
