If its a fighting game or something i play as them because i like to play as all the characters, if its something like the pokemon games, well i just don't.
Poll: Why do you play as opposite gender characters?

I'll often choose male for a first play through and I find my brain wants me to play more like myself. However for later play through when I might want to play an evil character or simply make different choices and I find that easier if I'm playing as the opposite gender, as my brain can easily say "that's not you, go nuts".
In 3rd person games, I tend to play with a female character for obvious reasons. (which is to say, that I'm male)
In RPGs I always play male, because I prefer looking intimidating to... not intimidating.

I always choose female during the first play though, but after that, it depends on the game. If I roll a barbarian type - dump charisma and intelligence for strength or whatever - then I'll go male because it works better. If I'm rolling a Lara Croft type, then I'll go female.
Also, if there is extensive voice acting, I'll do one each and stick with whoever sounds better.
I was tempted to pick 'I don't like the way my gender is portrayed', solely because of Sacred 2, where all the female avatars looked like hookers from some sort of bondage fantasy-land. But then I remembered I never replayed Sacred 2 because it was rubbish.
Also, if there is extensive voice acting, I'll do one each and stick with whoever sounds better.

Few reasons:
1) I don't like men in robes. Fantasy casters usually go female with me.
2) I like the looks better.
3) Better voice acting (CoughCommanderShepardCough)
4) Sometimes the gender is fixed to the character selection. AKA to play a Amazon in Diablo II, you had to be female.

When I use to play WoW I rolled an undead female mage. The reason? I really disliked the casting animation of the male counterpart.
Other than that I normally stick to playing male characters unless it is a fighting game or something like Left 4 Dead.
My brother on the other hand is very big on playing female in almost any game. I think it does it just to break the mold of always playing a male character.

I said to try something new. It's about variety, really. In fighting games, men are typically stronger and women are faster, so it's fun to switch up the fighting styles. In the crossover games, I usually play as Ryu & Chun-Li.
I don't have a preference for playing as either sex. Across the games I own where you can choose which sex to play, there's a pretty much 50/50 split between male and female characters.
Sometimes I play as the same gender, sometimes opposite. I don't think there's any real reason behind either apart from that you have to pick one.
My logic has and always will be, Ladies are slimmer and smaller in games, therefore harder targets to hit...And thats the story im sticking to 
I honestly have never really understood choosing the opposite gender if you are given a choice that has no actual effect on gameplay. In fallout 3 my character is a woman simply for the Black Widow perk. A perk you cannot get as a male. Where as in World of Warcraft, all 9 of my characters are males. I have even made a female before and deleted them within a few days, it just feels off to me. Call it double-standard or whatever you want, but if there's an actual benefit I can play female. But otherwise I just can't seem to wrap my head around it.
Only female I've played seriously was my Night Elf Hunter character from WoW, way back in early 2006. I did this because I'd played Warcraft 3 heaps, wanted to be a Night Elf Hunter, but male Night Elf Hunter's seemed alien and weird to me. So, for lore purposes I went female, because it fit the class/race I wanted to be. I didn't even think of myself as female, and never once fapped over my night elf in her underwear.
I have a female character in oblivion and made one in fallout 3 just yesterday.
i do it because it's a refreshing change and if i'm going to be staring at someone's arse for that amount of time it might as well be that of the opposite sex (teehee,sex.)
also, if i play a male character it always ends up looking like me or behaving like me. if i play as a girl though, i tend to give them their own personality (my fallout 3 character being a psychotic theif who steals the most insignificant objects and adds them to her mountain of stuff in the middle of the floor of her house.)
i think i'll go play more fallout now.

Going to war in a miniskirt and high heels is another trait that makes me pick a male character instead.
