Poll: Why don't people like the Flood?

Either most people don't like the Flood or they just don't know much about the Flood. And, from the two polls "Who would win of the Geth and the Flood" and "Flood (Halo), Replicators (Stargate), or the Borg (Star Trek)?," I think it's a mixture of both. Especially in the first poll I listed.

Most of the people think the Flood is just some mindless parasite with limited tactics that can't fly ships well and can only fight in ship-to-ship battles by smashing its own ships into the enemies. People think the Flood is so aggressive that it just tries to infect its enemy and does nothing else, even if its enemy is a synthetic race. This couldn't be further from the truth. The Flood is controlled by the Gravemind.

The Gravemind acts as the central brain for the Flood as a whole. Like the Borg Queen, Overmind, or Hive Mind. The Flood can also pilot ships extremely precisely. Even more so than any other known species. The Gravemind is also a brilliant tactician and was able to defeat the Forerunner fleets many times during the Forerunner-Flood war. And the only reason the Flood was so aggressive in the Halo games is because it was trying to do everything that it could to stop the Covenant from firing the Halos and destroying the universe. In fact, without the Flood, the Master Chief would not have been able to stop the Prophets.

There seems to be some misunderstanding: THIS POLL IS NOT ASKING IF YOU LIKE FIGHTING AGAINST THE FLOOD IN THE GAMES! IT IS NOT ASKING YOU WHETHER YOU THINK THE FLOOD IS SCARY OR NOT IN THE GAME! IT IS ASKING IF YOU FIND THE FLOOD ITSELF INTERESTING OR AWESOME. FORGET ABOUT WHAT IT IS IN THE DAMN GAMES!

Because, once you've gone through "Cortana" On Halo 3, you will hate the flood for eternity.

I'm not asking if people like them from a gameplay sense. I'm asking if people like them. No one liked the Flood levels, so stop focusing on them. Focus on the Flood itself. How they work, what they are, what they do, how they look.

I've gone through Cortana many times to help my friends get skulls and complete the campaign. I still love the Flood. I hate that level, but I still like the Flood. This poll is not asking if people like fighting against the Flood in the games, it's asking if people like the Flood as a species.

I think it's less about disliking the Flood and more about disliking Halo itself.

I'm sorry, but playing against the Flood on my freind's Xbox was totally gay. The thing about horror is the sensation of gore as you rip people to shreds while immersed in a scary atmosphere. Something which the Flood doesn't come come close to accomplishing.

EDIT: Considering it's from a video game, doesn't that mean that the gameplay is pretty much vital for their assesment?

The Borg are best. Now lower your shields and prepare to be assimilated. Your cultural and biological distinctiveness will adapt to services ours. Resistance Is Futile.

I hated the flood from the first game, let alone the third....

The flood seemed like an artificial lengthening system! Like they knew the game wasn't long enough so they chucked in some god awful extremely long and slow unkillable horde section... It was extremely unimaginative from the designers stand point, and extremely boring...

They're boring, don't bring anything to the table of interest, aren't original, and are just... dull.

Black headcrabs did a much better job at the survival/horror thing than the flood did, and it's essentially the same thing except instead of just one black headcrab running around, you have to use your shotty to shoot at some floating flood.

No. Bungie fucked up the horror parts. The only thing scary about those levels was the music. The levels were frustrating and badly designed and if the gameplay itself wasn't so damned satisfying, I wouldn't have played them at all. But, that doesn't mean that the Flood can't still be awesome. It just means that they have yet to be used in a game properly.

Tyranids+head crabs+fungus=The Flood. How can that be dull and uninteresting?

Personally for me the levels which involved the Flood never seemed that fun..

And there was always a small voice in the back of my head screaming "Headcrab rip off"

*shrug*

I suppose they help alot to drive the story in Halo though (which i never really cared for much anyway)

Think its cause those 3 have better character than the Flood.(Maybe not the Hive Mind the Tyranids gor boring after the 4th edition.)

But the Zerg have characters that flesh out the them better than the flood. The Overmind, Kerrigan and the Cerebrates gives the Zerg Swarm more aim and character apart from mindless creatures that want to eat you. You know they have characters that makes the whole thing interesting and not some generic Space Monster.

No, that's not horror. That's just gore. Horror is best done with an oppressive environment, and can be done with or without gore.

Anyway, as for the flood-geth thing; yes, they can do things other than infect. But the majority of their fighting forces come from infections (the remaining small amount being 'pure' forms). The thing that made them best their enemies tended to be numbers. When their numbers are less because they can't use their primary recruitment tactic, they lose that edge.

You need to read some Lovecraft novels to know what horror really is.

To give you an example of what horror really is: imagine waking up in the middle of the night hearing some strange noise and thinking someone is in your home, in the dark waiting for you. Thats a basic horror cliche. Not knowing what lies in the dark. And not gore has you described.

I am sorry, but your question is:
Do you like the flood?

And no, i don't. The levels in which they were placed were arbitrary and pathetic, and as a result, i cant stand them. From a non-gameplay perspective i still dont really like them too much; theyre an enigma, they had a purpose (apparently) but everyone has kind of forgotten it. By the time Halo 3 came out and the storyline of the trilogy had gotten so bizarre and mixed up that i didnt care anymore, it really pissed me off that they had chucked them in the game again as another arbitrary form of lengthening the game!

Im sorry, i just really didn't like the flood that much; i believe that halo would have been a much better game without them.

The only similarity between the Flood and the Head Crabs are the Flood Infection Forms that take over and mutate the hosts. Everything else is so different and the Flood are much deeper and more complex than the Head Crabs. I wish people would stop calling the Flood a Head Crab ripoff. It's more like the Tyranids or Zerg meets a hyper-advanced fungus than it is a Head Crab ripoff.

Thinking about the flood as a species. They're completely badass, determined and unstoppable.

Again from what you say people don't like them because the very idea of the flood isn't original its been done befor, an example is HALF LIFE or RESIDENT EVIL 4, there are other games with parasites but I haven't played. Still give me some time an I'm sure I can find games with a life for that poses bodies because in the end thats all they are. The flood are just on part of an overal average story in the halo series, I for one don't like halo and have it only for the multi player. The flood are old news to me because I grew up with Half life and Halo was never that great to me because it felt like adding half life to quake and in my books thats a very stupid idea.
