Poll: Why has nobody made a 1v1 Gladiator simulation game...?

Well theres Gladius, Shadows of Rome, that other game that came out around the time the Gladiator film was coming out, Barbarian (old but very violent for its day)... Thats all I've got from the top of my head, I'm sure theres more than that too.

Wasn't there like a Playstation Move title that let you use the Dildo controller AS an actual sword? Like you swing it precisely the way you want it to go, and you use the......nunchuk thing as a shield, I guess?
I remember seeing some vids of it and thinking it was a really cool concept. One of the few places where Motion controls could make the game a 100 times better than if it was with a control pad. Maybe look into that?
OT: JUST a Gladiator game would be kind of Boring in my opinion. Someone should make a Good and proper Roman RPG. And before you say Brotherhood, I mean like 100BC Rome, not 1500's, so shut up.
Think about it. You select an Origin story: Noble's child, Commoner, Slave, whatever. Aaaand then, you just......do stuff. Anything you want. Get a job. Become a Gladiator. Lead armies against Barbarians. Get married. Have little Roman kids. Help Brutus assassinate Caesar OR help Mark Anthony kill... Cassius, was it? (why do you think I specifically said 100BC?) Whatever. Just.....Role-play, you know?

What you want sounds sort of like what I heard Bushido Blade is, only with gladiators. I do like the realistic fighter idea. Despite the fact that I think realism can be overrated in games, I do think it has its place.
I think the main reason it's never been done in a AAA sort of title as you seem to be asking for is because, even if the dev only did two characters, the crowd, and just one on one fighting, it would still take a lot of time and money. They'd still have to get artists, programmers, modelers, animators, and so on, and then pay them for the months worth of work they'd have to put into it for what, in the end, would be a game almost nobody would likely pay more then $5 at best. If they did try making into a full game with multiple characters and such but still kept the main focus on 1-on-1 fighting, then it would still be a fairly niche market that would make it very hard to recover the investment, let alone make any sort of profit from.
That's why gladiator-type things such as that are added on to games such as Oblivion, as then it isn't too hard to add it in as something that not everyone has to play if they don't want to, but some would enjoy. But at that point, it has to (or at least it's much easier to have it) follow the gameplay of the main game, and you don't see too many games based around realistic fighting in a way such as that.

Simulator or game? Two different things. One could be an ultra realistic game which I doubt would sell all that well, the other could be a fighting game closer to the Japanese fighting games.Jay Parrish said:

No one made one because fighters aren't widely produced in the west, and the Japanese tend to take endless liberties with historical facts.

Yeah, Bushido Blade is as close as I think you're going to get. Or maybe the hand-to-hand fighting from The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. The problem is that it will always be difficult to make a fun fighting game that doesn't have, at its core, 'press X to hit with sword." While I don't think that realism is impossible, it is very hard to do well. Especially if you are looking at fighting lions or in big groups, there is huge potential for a realistic game to become a cheap-death-a-thon.

A game in which the opponent can kill you in one hit will naturally be fast as hell, and since the game would just be a series of fights it'd just be Soul Calibur in Rome with crappier swords.

Deadliest Warrior, an Xbox Live Arcade game has this, and it's epic. You can fight Gladiator Vs Gladiator, but that would get boring pretty quick. The game has warriors from many different ages and cultures, and it's probably the most realistic fighting game I have played. It's still not that realistic, but if you get say, an axe to the head then you are dead. If you get a limb lopped off but are otherwise fine then you get about 3 seconds to wildly swing with whatever was in your other hand before you bleed out. You can also get broken limbs, and there's a bunch of other features I don't care to list.
Not to mention that it's incredibly fun, try the demo if you have a 360.

I would love a gladiator themed fighting game. I also can't see why they wouldn't make it/be making it because it would probably see pretty well. I'd hope it wouldn't just be gladiatorial battles, but also chariot races and other events from that time.
The arena battles in Oblivion were boring, but going out into the crowd oddly gave off a good vice. You open that door and see the light outside, and with each step it grows bigger. The bloodstains on the wall and floor--still the light growing bigger as you get closer. The announcer calling you by your fake name and the crowd cheering.

No massive Multiplayer, no potential for even an excuse plot. Very little room to milk it for sequels, especially since rome isn't very big at the moment. Personally, I'd suggest you go and do Oblivions Arena quests a couple of hundred times, since that's likely the closest you will get.
