Poll: Why was Halo Wars considered a bad RTS?

I honestly don't understand the level of putrid bile this game gets covered with every time its brought up as being a decent RTS. From my playing of the multiplayer it really did show how much two competent players had to adjust on the fly to different tactics employed by eachother.

It also seems that balance was also accounted for. Aircraft decimate tanks, tanks decimate infantry, infantry are competent but need support unless garrisoned and in great numbers, and can take down aircraft pretty handily, while still being needed in every army due to said garrisoning ability.

Is it the only being able to place x number of buildings in a base or something, because after playing this game (finally) I see nothing wrong with it.

Because it was on a console.

It functioned perfectly, so I don't see the big deal. It didn't call for the micro-management advantage of PC controls.

Because it's just horrible, and broken, and even though I hate RTS games, even I know that you can only really play them properly on PC.

Out of all the RTS games I have played, on console or PC, it was pretty damn... well, worthless. Generic.
Sure, it had some colourful parts, but it just seemed too... dull.
Some RTS games work on consoles quite well. That one didn't. Maybe it would have worked better on PC, but I don't think so. It was just too dull. They had a chance to make a good game, and just made a mediocre one.
There are much better ones available for a fraction of the price >.>

I couldn't stand to play it for long. I didn't hate it or anything, but it lacked the depth of many other RTS games and it was just a bit of a pain to do this all on the 360.

It was? I thought it was one of the best console RTSs out there, at least in this generation and at its time.

82 on Metacritic? [http://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox-360/halo-wars] That's not bad at all.

It's the only RTS I have ever played, but I assume it was only because it was on the 360.

But then, for a console RTS, it's pretty damn good.

Because it was a Halo game.

Seriously though, its the best console-RTS there is to be honest. Managed to make the controls not horrible, and was rather fun. Sure it wasn't that good when compared to RTS's on a PC, but its still the best console RTS there is. At least in terms of controls.

I thought it was pretty fun, it compensated for the limits of a controller fairly well without being mindnumbingly complicated.

oh ninja'd

basically because it was on console.

it worked just fine, it didn't necessarily have the level of micro managing that pc calls for, but big deal, the game never flaunted it so i dont know why people get up in arms about it.

Because Command and Conquer 4 wasn't out at the time to drop the bar through the god damn floor. I'm sorry, is this an RTS or an MMO? Because I seem to be doing a lot of skirmish grinding just to unlock units so I can actually not get destroyed in the campaign missions.

Back when Halo Wars came out, I tried the demo and thought "meh." Now though, give me the choice between Halo Wars and C&C4 and I'll grab that copy of Halo Wars faster than you can say "Nobody cares about the 'wife' character EA!"

BTW, no hate from me just for it being on a console. I played Red Alert 3 on PS3 over PC because EA had SecuROM in it at the time. And I also played and completed the Commander's Challenge game on PS3 as well (basically it is the Uprising game minus the campaign and skirmish modes). And I got 100% of the trophies in both, so I'm certainly not going to hate on a game just because it's on a console. PC games can suck too as the aforementioned C&C4 has taught us.

Answer: PC gamers hate everything on a console, it could be the best RTS ever and an entire community would hate on it, then add on the people that hate Halo with a passion and you have an army of negative reviews, and blind hate.

World's Tallest Midget.

I get what you're saying that it's the best RTS on a console, but that's not exactly praise for a fan of PC RTSs. Not a fan myself but unless the game adds some cool facet than it's asking for praise for what is considered sub-par by RTS standards.

It's not too strategized.
Me and my friends sadly win our online matches due to spamming the same Uber Unit over and over.
The control's and what-not were fine, but the game just felt a little slow, It's not bad, it's definitely a great console RTS, but compared to stuff like StarCraft? There's no comparison.

Apparently it was just too damned easy. You just pile a bunch of really strong units on your enemy's ass and that's it.

Technically it all worked very well, but in the eye of the player that doesn't mean much if you can't make an exciting and challenging game with it.

I think it deserves praise solely for showing that you can have halfway-decent and easy-to-use RTS controles on a gamepad. Yes it needs some refinement, but its still pretty amazing they were able to make the controls not suck.
