Whatever companies decide to make is what people will buy. Try buying a crt tv anymore, you won;t find them anywhere except walmart and as the people get high definition tvs they will eventually move to bluray, especially if companies start to phase dvds out. Also people complain about the price of players, the players themselves have already gone down in price ive seen them for $160(Canadian dollars) As everyone gets them the price on the discs will go down as well. dvds were pretty damn expensive too when they first came out.

It took many years for DVD to really get to the point where VHS was no longer on sale.

But there are gazillions of tapes out there-- tapes that still work on analog TVs. Tapes that can still be used to record programs easier than a DVD can.

I could give two craps about blu-ray. higher def than high def yes, but it will be five or six years anyway before you start really driving DVDs off the shelf.

When DVD came out, people created massive DVD collections; high quality digital collections of movies. What does casablanca gain from being on blue-ray anyway? I understand why one would prefer the dark night on blu-ray, but does kevin bacon look any better on the blue ray of Tremors than he does on the dvd?

I was thinking about this as I reinstalled Battlefield 2 the other day . I certainly hope that Blu-Ray or another high-capacity standard comes along for game releases, as I don't particularly relish either keeping track of or switching between five discs to install games. Since Blu-Ray and DVD are interoperable, there's no hangup for upgrading beyond price. Given that prices have come down significantly over the past few years (a BD-ROM/DVD-R combo drive can now be had for under $100), it's reasonable to expect a transition as people replace their old computers and DVD players.

Well it distroyed HD-DVD so its just a matter of time.
Sony spending millions of dollars on store space killed DVD, at target they paid us a fortune to increase their Bluray displays to 6 Ft and they advertised the hell out of it. Also getting all majors studios other than WB after a while to back them killed HD. But I remain amused as we scarcly sell BR disc or players. I mean who pays 29.99 for a new BR release when you can get the DVD for 9.99. O well, I'm still a firm believer in on demand and DD replacing any disc, mmmmm 30mb connections....

Also for all you saying when HDTVS get popular, ummmm we at target don't even sell anything other than 1080p LCD tvs 720p for little kitchen tvs. We had a 32 inch on sale the other day for 379.99. So HD is here and cheap. Now we have to worry about the new OLED tvs, joy.

digital distribution will eventually kill off al optical drives, as, just like DVD had a clear advantage over VHS, DD (as i shall call it :p) has a clear advantage over DVD/CD's (etc), due to its capacity to store many more films in a much smaller space.

I think blu-ray will continue in videogames for a while (cause games tend to be much bigger than films/music files), but impart from that blu-ray has no great advantage over DVD except a small improvement in picture quality, while DD can offer both picture quality (eventually), and storage space.

DVD is good enough for me, and I think it's good enough for a lot of other people, too. Why would I possibly spend so much more for something that can only be incrementally better at this point? Better sound and video? I don't care-it's not worth the extra money to me.

I can pick up secondhand DVDs off of Half or Ebay for peanuts. Again, why would I spend ten or twenty times as much for Bluray discs? I just bought the Goodfellas 2-Disc Collectors set for under 8 bucks. Is the difference in picture and sound quality enough to justify my paying an extra 20 bucks for a Blu-Ray copy? Not to mention the cost of the player.

I still watch and buy VHS tapes all the time, too.

Oh, and I voted that Digital Distribution will kill both of them. I don't use it, but enough people do.

It will, but it will happen a LOT slower then previous medium transitions.

More likely, the NEXT great and truly innovative medium will come out that will replace both DVD and Blu-Ray before Blu-Ray takes over entirely.

I can't see it happening for a long time, if at all. Dvd is still a great form of distributing films and blu-ray is too dam expensive for most consumers at the moment, but then again dvd was pretty expensive when it first came out.

DVD didn't have any real competition as far as mediums were concerned. It was lightyears ahead of VHS, and CDs were never really utilized for movie distribution. All new medium are always expensive at first. My parents paid $1200 for their first VCR.

Blu-Ray isn't so much more innovative over DVDs for them to replace DVDs for some time. They aren't any easier to make, they don't currently have any features that DVDs don't have, apart from the quality of the images, which is lost on 90% of televisions out there.

I don't think it will happen before the next big thing wipes them both out.

It better not.

I don't fancy paying about £500 for something that's no different to DVD.
This. I already have a DVD player, I'm not buying anything else to play movies until it explodes, killing several Irish immigrant families.
You can diss Blu-Ray, but for the love o' St. Patrick don't be hatin' the Irish!

Probably when HVD [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holographic_Versatile_Disc] comes out Blu-Ray will replace the DVD then.

Hmm, to be honest I haven't seen a Blu-Ray movie, even though I own one (Paprika, an anime movie I need to see). I probably will watch it but I won't know for sure whether Blu-Ray is better unless I watch a Blu-Ray movie for more than five minutes.

My brother and I watched a part of Transformers on Blu-Ray in a shopping center, my brother was terrified because "he no trust magic box that makes things real". He found it so awkward watching Shia Belouf's in-movie parents make awkward jokes because it made you feel like you were in the room yourself.

To be honest, as well as a DVD player and my 360 (once it's been sent for repair), I also have my laptop to play DVD's on. However, I still have my old VCR as well, and still have a few videos (not many, I only really kept LOTR since I couldn't be bothered to go out and get the DVD's for three films I already have on video). However, if Blu-Ray overtakes and makes DVD's obsolete, only then will I consider getting a Blu-Ray player, and even then I'd much prefer to get a dedicated player rather than a PS3 (nothing against the PS3, I'm just not that interested in that particular console). Eventually it may well render the DVD obsolete, and that will be a sad day indeed. Trouble is, as soon as that happens something even more new and 'better' will come along and the cycle will start again. The miracle, or curse, of technology...

I'm not. It's just that I don't have any other immigrant families huddled around my DVD player.
Where are you from, the 19th century?
Get with the times!
Theres a Samoan and a El Salvadorean family huddled around my bluray player, oh, the sweet warmth of blue laser light!

Certainly. There was a picture showing how bluray is doing better then HDTV's, DVDs, VHS and all other media for the amount of time it's been out.
Fact is bluray is much better looking, and with HDTVs on the increase as it's nearly impossible to get a CRT TV, people will want better looking media, with every survey I can find suggesting so.

Digital distribution won't be around for a long time considering not everyone has broadband, and most people don't have the speeds required. Not to mention services like Steam show the giant flaws in the system e.g.Free trial of UT3 over the weekend on Steam. Server was too busy until late Sunday. A free trail that turned into nothing due to server congestion.
That won't ever happen with hardcopys, not to mention people like hardcopys for safety incase their PC breaks.
Agree with everything you said there.

How come I was unaware of this. I need to see it to believe it has that much storage capacity.
