No, the credit card I had logged into PSN was a dead one, so no credit theft there.
I'm also more pissed at the hacker(s) than at Sony, I just want this whole business to be finished as fast as possible.

So, is the nature of class action lawsuits such that the penalty amount is independent of the number of participants, or does it depend on the number of people who join?

If opting out doesn't do any more than increase the share for those who joined, would it be better to join the lawsuit and then donate your share back to Sony? Or does the number of people who opt in affect more than just the final penalty amount?

I see no point in opting out if it doesn't lessen the amount Sony has to pay.

No, this kind of thing happens all the time with different companies. The fact it is such a big deal when it happens to Sony is disgusting. I hope the judge takes one look, laughs, and throws the case out.

Tracking down the jerks that did it, I will support that. Going after Sony, however, is stupid.
The problem is that they didn't notify us quick enough. They might not have been sure that our details had been taken at that point, fine, but they should've at least warned us of the possibility.
They still aren't sure. They've said multiple times that it's only a possibility. The newest blog post even says that there is no evidence to suggest that CC info was taken.

Also, I think suing Sony is only going to add to the problem, and that suing them for being robbed is retarded.
Did you read what I said at all?

They might not have been sure that our details had been taken at that point, fine,
I realise they weren't sure, but they should've said to us as soon as they saw the breach:

"Hey guys, there's a possibility your information has been stolen, so get on that."

But no, they left it a week after the breach occurred. That's the issue here, it doesn't matter if they're sure, but they should at least notify us of the possibility.

I knew it was a matter of time before a class action lawsuit came into play.
Nah, I'm not gonna do anything. Just hope everything gets dealt with as soon as possible.

Most companies don't lose 70 million people personal information due to storing it all entirely unencrypted.

No. Let's say Sony does get sued by the millions of PSN users. That's alot of money, but it's being split in a lot of different directions. So even if I hopped on that would get me what, like 16 dollars?
I haven't really looked at Sony's bank account, I'm just making a statement. So please, no: "Well, Sony has X million PSN users and X million dollars-" Yeah yeah, go play with your calculator somewhere else.

No! You can't blame Sony! They just wanted to make good games.

They're the ones who got hacked! They're the ones who created a vulnerable network where peoples' private information was compromised.

Playing games is more important than the lack of care with my private information.

(end naive yet typical sony defense)

A lot of people have been saying that Sony took no steps to safeguard the information but I have seen no evidence of that. Is there an article I missed or is this another of the far reaching assumptions this site (in general, I know there are exceptions) has been jumping to over this whole issue? I genuinely want to know.

I'm with Sony on this one. Hopefully Steam doesn't get hacked.

Also, why the hell would you want Sony sued

Sony sued = less games

I've never used a credit card over PSN, so I'm just going to stay out of it.

I did change all of my passwords, just in case.

Putting how I feel towards the people joining this thing into words would probably result in my account being banned on this site. Instead I will make a few points. The first of which is a highly cut version of the way I would like to express my anger towards the people hacking Sony and the people suing Sony. I would also like to say this now that I DO NOT know the full extent of what is going on and NEITHER DO YOU. I would also like to say that I am a PSN user as well so I have been affected by this.

My points as far as my knowledge of the situation goes.

1. Shits
2. Why is Sony being sued when they did nothing wrong? How do we know that the information they have wasn't encrypted. If this is true then is it actually a problem? Didn't we willingly give Sony our information knowing someone could potentially hack and obtain it anyway even if it were encrypted?
3. No matter how good someone's security is, it is NEVER full proof.
4. We don't know whether Sony knew of the information being stolen from the beginning yet everyone is acting as though there is proof that they knew right from day one.
5. Why haven't as many people expressed anger towards the hackers. The REAL enemy. Attacking Sony will not achieve anything and if the lawsuit succeeds then Sony is being unjustly punished.
6. Final Point. There is no proof either way. Sony could be at fault and it might not be just as easily. What happened to INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY?

Basically, it is WAY too early to be pointing the finger as we know NOTHING of what is truly going on. Until then, I will sit and wait for FACTS to come out BEFORE I start doing something that could potentially destroy many jobs and whatever else eludes my brain at the moment.

I would also like to say that if it turns out in the end that Sony has done something clearly VERY wrong then I would not hesitate to blame them for what wrongs they may have done.

Not sending emails to 75 million people immediately does not concern me. You try doing that.

No, this started with GeoHotz using Linux to hack ps3, then getting Linux removed. Then he hacked anyway and gave public access to the SECURITY ROOT KEY for the ps3 which allowed anyone who got hold of it to bypass security checks, because let's face it. Give a hacker a master key, they will use it. The only thing Sony is at fault is not restructuring the PSN sooner and creating a new security root key.
