Your poll kind of fails. Where is the 'not getting it, and fucking hate it option'?

I am not the least bit unsure.
Limited options for the poll so I couldn't squeeze it in, sorry.

You chose not to include what would likely be one of the most popular choices?

I kind of thought it could be folded into "Not getting it and not sure" and this is the issue with a poll system that only has 8 fucking choices... If I cut anything people would complain.

Probably would have been better to find both "Getting it and not sure" and "Not getting it and not sure" into one single option of "Not sure".

In retrospect that does make more logical sense. Thanks.

Still waiting on more reviews. I'm advising my wife (who has the only Windows 8 machine in the house in the form of her laptop) to go for the free upgrade, as what I've seen so far suggests it's definitely an improvement over 8, assuming the upgrade can be accomplished without too much kibboshing of existing, important software on her computer. As for me, I think the systems that are sub-Windows 8 can stay where they are for the moment.
Go look at that massively invasive privacy policy again, also remember that new versions of windows always have far far far FAR FAR worse security than a version that's been on the market for at least six months. If you're okay with your wife being more exposed to viruses, ransomware, malware, being hacked and more. Then sure the upgrade. Other wise stick with 8, hell it would probably be smartest to downgrade to 7.

Back on topic, after seeing that privacy policy, fuck MicroSoft for the foreseeable future. If I get windows again it's going to be 7, windows 8 and 10 can go rot for all I care. I can't wait until Steve Gibson talks about this on "Security NOW!".

Easy, there, hoss. The laptop in question isn't used for anything sensitive, and even the sites that approve of 10 recommend waiting a few months to see if existing bugs iron out; time enough to see if M$ eases back on the privacy policy, or clarifies if, for instance, it's only linked to Cortana (and in turn, if as a feature that can be disabled.)

If the policy does prove as bad as claimed, there's going to be a reckoning. This isn't Origin: businesses, health care providers and government agencies are going to use this OS, and they're going to want to know it can handle sensitive data without handing it all back to Redmond.

Well the privacy policy could be a direct result of a national security letter from the US government. We might not get ANY clarification in that case, especially if that letter came with a gag order.

Also please don't call me hoss. *shudder*

I can safely say Windows 7 will be my last Microsoft purchase, especially after discovering the new Astonishingly invasive privacy policy for Windows 10, it's genuinely 1984 levels we're talking here.

Here's a couple highlights from the new policy:

"To enable Cortana to provide personalized experiences and relevant suggestions, Microsoft collects and uses various types of data, such as your device location, data from your calendar, the apps you use, data from your emails and text messages, who you call, your contacts and how often you interact with them on your device. Cortana also learns about you by collecting data about how you use your device and other Microsoft services, such as your music, alarm settings, whether the lock screen is on, what you view and purchase, your browse and Bing search history, and more."

And the real kicker...

"We will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith\belief that doing so is necessary to, for example, "protect their customers" or "enforce the terms governing
the use of the services"

This is INSANE, Microsoft will now have the power to look through your folders, e-mails, contacts...Remotely, whenever they feel like it. They can either sell the information to advertisers, or forward it to the NSA.

And as if that wasn't bad enough, they're not only forcing Windows updates unless you buy Pro Version, there's now also ads in the pre-installed games (I.E. Solitare) that you can pay a monthly fee of $1.49 to remove. This is presumably to target older users who still wish to play such games, not realizing they can get free alternatives. Just another scummy cash grab...

Lastly, as the cherry on top, anyone that does the upgrade to 10 but decides they want to go back? Your activation key is no longer valid for 7 or 8, it'll only work for 10 now.

Now some people are reporting getting decent FPS boosts in certain games by upgrading to 10 (Possibly from the new drivers), and if any future game is DirectX 12 exclusive you'll need 10 to run it. But for me? Fuck that. None of that is worth the Orwellian bullshit Microsoft just pulled.

You really have to start wondering where this train is headed, and whether or not it might be prudent to stop off at the next Linux terminal. I'm sticking with Windows 7 for games that absolutely require it, and dual-booting with Linux Mint for everything else. And I recommend anyone else do the same.

For those interested, here's where I discovered such transgressions: https://edri.org/microsofts-new-small-print-how-your-personal-data-abused/

Wow thank you for this information. I am very surprised to not see EFF or FTFF all over this. This seriously looks like Microsoft is teaming up with the government to enable the CISA Act. Put these two things together, and anyone who files a National Security Request or legal action will be able to just ask Microsoft for all of your data, including accounts and passwords.

Still got "windows 10 upgrade is being released in waves, we'll notify you when you can upgrade", or something to that effect.

Hoping to like it. Skipped 8 altogether.

I like it so far but annoyed that I have to now rearrange my tiles again on the new smart screen. I had it all perfectly sorted on 8.1 but oh well. My Norton stopped working but the realised that I had to re-add it to my list. Stupid I know but still only too less then 5 mins.

Now, Cortana and the search bar next to Start. It goes to Microsoft "Edge" and uses Bing. Does anyone know a way of reediting that? Or has Microsoft locked it?

So yeah, still getting use too as I no longer have to put the cursor to the edge of the screen to bring up options and the "Easy Access" in File Explorer is a pain. Also, for example, if you want to sort an image folder by "Date" and want to flick through recent to older, it ignores that. Unless I need to use something else. My accelerometer doesn't work. I didn't know I had one.

If you know what I am talking about? Please help.

So this came up on a recent 4chan thread. It... doesn't look good.

Luckily bullshit like that won't fly in the EU, so I ain't all too worried for my own situation.

For my North American friends it's another matter. Though honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if that kind of bullshit is already far and wide incorporated in other big IT corporation privacy policies. Maybe worded more vaguely, but in the end with the same ramifications. As if this sort of thing hasn't been going on for years already.

I just dove into my own privacy settings, and it seems like they either updated some of the options or the European version is just different. There was still questionable stuff to be found, so I definitely turned some things off for good measure.

I have no real complaints so far, the upgrade process was pretty much flawless on my laptop but then I did do a reset immediately after as I wanted a fresh start for my work machine (I'm a programmer, a fresh speedy machine is always a must).

Out of everything I've tried over the past 3 days the only issue I have had is with my NVIDIA Drivers on my desktop causing some stuttering but magically the Windows 10 update service reinstalled them and it fixed it right away (after 5 hours of me trying, yes I tried a clean install from NVIDIA's site). But on the other hand my work laptops NVIDIA drivers worked with no issues immediately.

And while I know theres a lot of complaints about the forced updates I can't say theres been an issue so far, I admit I do prefer to choose my updates but so far it's been pretty flawless in installing them. My only 1 gripe is I have the pro edition on both my gaming rig and work laptop, but theres no way to choose or completely turn off updates you can only defer them.

Other than that it's only positives, it looks great, everything just works, no program incompatibilities and the thing boots in less than a second on both machines (excluding BIOS splash you don't even see the loading bar, and if your wondering both machines run off 500GB Samsung 850 Evo's, I fully recommend them).

I'll get it in a couple of weeks. Let them sort out the initial bugs of the rollout first.

I don't dislike it.

The new action panel is useful but I am currently running into an issue with my network card which is not playing nice with Win 10. Fortunately I am a it of a pack rat and had an older one that actually does work, it's just not all that reliable.

No useful thoughts at all on the new web browser. It still looks like a version of Firefox or Chrome that they are breaking out 10 years too late so I see little reason to fuss about importing all my bookmarks and shit to give it a proper spin.

It performs about as good as Win 7. From what i had heard of Win 8, I was expecting a boost in performance. That seems to not be the case so far though I will definitely appreciate the increase support for newer versions of Direct X as they come out.
