You chose not to include what would likely be one of the most popular choices?vallorn said:Limited options for the poll so I couldn't squeeze it in, sorry.Dimitriov said:Your poll kind of fails. Where is the 'not getting it, and fucking hate it option'?

I kind of thought it could be folded into "Not getting it and not sure" and this is the issue with a poll system that only has 8 fucking choices... If I cut anything people would complain.infohippie said:You chose not to include what would likely be one of the most popular choices?vallorn said:Limited options for the poll so I couldn't squeeze it in, sorry.Dimitriov said:Your poll kind of fails. Probably would have been better to find both "Getting it and not sure" and "Not getting it and not sure" into one single option of "Not sure".vallorn said:I kind of thought it could be folded into "Not getting it and not sure" and this is the issue with a poll system that only has 8 fucking choices... In retrospect that does make more logical sense. Go look at that massively invasive privacy policy again, also remember that new versions of windows always have far far far FAR FAR worse security than a version that's been on the market for at least six months. If you're okay with your wife being more exposed to viruses, ransomware, malware, being hacked and more. Then sure the upgrade. Other wise stick with 8, hell it would probably be smartest to downgrade to 7.Callate said:Still waiting on more reviews. I'm advising my wife (who has the only Windows 8 machine in the house in the form of her laptop) to go for the free upgrade, as what I've seen so far suggests it's definitely an improvement over 8, assuming the upgrade can be accomplished without too much kibboshing of existing, important software on her computer. As for me, I think the systems that are sub-Windows 8 can stay where they are for the moment.
Easy, there, hoss. The laptop in question isn't used for anything sensitive, and even the sites that approve of 10 recommend waiting a few months to see if existing bugs iron out; time enough to see if M$ eases back on the privacy policy, or clarifies if, for instance, it's only linked to Cortana (and in turn, if as a feature that can be disabled.)KyuubiNoKitsune-Hime said:Go look at that massively invasive privacy policy again, also remember that new versions of windows always have far far far FAR FAR worse security than a version that's been on the market for at least six months. Back on topic, after seeing that privacy policy, fuck MicroSoft for the foreseeable future. If I get windows again it's going to be 7, windows 8 and 10 can go rot for all I care. I can't wait until Steve Gibson talks about this on "Security NOW!".
Well the privacy policy could be a direct result of a national security letter from the US government. We might not get ANY clarification in that case, especially if that letter came with a gag order.Callate said:Easy, there, hoss. If the policy does prove as bad as claimed, there's going to be a reckoning. This isn't Origin: businesses, health care providers and government agencies are going to use this OS, and they're going to want to know it can handle sensitive data without handing it all back to Redmond.
Wow thank you for this information. I am very surprised to not see EFF or FTFF all over this. This seriously looks like Microsoft is teaming up with the government to enable the CISA Act. Put these two things together, and anyone who files a National Security Request or legal action will be able to just ask Microsoft for all of your data, including accounts and passwords.Mr.Savage said:I can safely say Windows 7 will be my last Microsoft purchase, especially after discovering the new Astonishingly invasive privacy policy for Windows 10, it's genuinely 1984 levels we're talking here.
Here's a couple highlights from the new policy:
"To enable Cortana to provide personalized experiences and relevant suggestions, Microsoft collects and uses various types of data, such as your device location, data from your calendar, the apps you use, data from your emails and text messages, who you call, your contacts and how often you interact with them on your device. Cortana also learns about you by collecting data about how you use your device and other Microsoft services, such as your music, alarm settings, whether the lock screen is on, what you view and purchase, your browse and Bing search history, and more."
And the real kicker...
"We will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith\belief that doing so is necessary to, for example, "protect their customers" or "enforce the terms governing
the use of the services"
This is INSANE, Microsoft will now have the power to look through your folders, e-mails, contacts...Remotely, whenever they feel like it. They can either sell the information to advertisers, or forward it to the NSA.
And as if that wasn't bad enough, they're not only forcing Windows updates unless you buy Pro Version, there's now also ads in the pre-installed games (I.E. Solitare) that you can pay a monthly fee of $1.49 to remove. This is presumably to target older users who still wish to play such games, not realizing they can get free alternatives. Just another scummy cash grab...
Lastly, as the cherry on top, anyone that does the upgrade to 10 but decides they want to go back? Your activation key is no longer valid for 7 or 8, it'll only work for 10 now.
Now some people are reporting getting decent FPS boosts in certain games by upgrading to 10 (Possibly from the new drivers), and if any future game is DirectX 12 exclusive you'll need 10 to run it. But for me? Fuck that. None of that is worth the Orwellian bullshit Microsoft just pulled.
You really have to start wondering where this train is headed, and whether or not it might be prudent to stop off at the next Linux terminal. I'm sticking with Windows 7 for games that absolutely require it, and dual-booting with Linux Mint for everything else. And I recommend anyone else do the same.

Luckily bullshit like that won't fly in the EU, so I ain't all too worried for my own situation.Mr.Savage said:le snip
I just dove into my own privacy settings, and it seems like they either updated some of the options or the European version is just different. There was still questionable stuff to be found, so I definitely turned some things off for good measure.Asclepion said:So this came up on a recent 4chan thread. It... doesn't look good.
