Poll: Windows 10- Worth It?

If you're on any Windows version other than 7, upgrade. Definitely. No question.

If you're on Windows 7, you should probably upgrade now. The horror stories about 10 are somewhat exaggerated in my experience, I've had no issues personally after a clean install (I did have some problemts with Windows not auto-upgrading itself because "there was an error" but managed to sort it out through a clean install) and since then I've not looked back.

Windows 10 has mandatory, automatic updates. This alone means i will not be installing it in any foreseeable future. So i vote no, not worth it.

games crashing

I have had crashes in new games (GTA V, MGS V, Batman: Arkham Knight, BF4 and others), but I don't know if it's Windows 10, my GTX 780, the Nvidia drivers, my CPU overclock settings (i5-4670k at 4 GHz) or something else. I might go with AMD next time because of it.

Otherwise, Windows 10 has been satisfactory. One of the most useful changes for me has been pinning folders. I can right click on the folder icon on my taskbar and go anywhere I want.

So if windows 10 or your own meddling with CPU clocks caused the crash - your going to blame the manufacturer and go with competitor because of it. Perfect logic there is see.

Also why would you even overclock your CPU. I have a 4670 running at stock clock and it runs all games you listed without a problem.

What happens if a crippling update is rolled out? You're screwed. What happens if you're in the middle of rendering or playing a game and the system decides you've delayed it too long and need to update now? You're screwed.

Compiling code for a test build. Computer suddenly restarts because it decided that you sohuld update and since your not moving your mouse you clearly arent doing anything! Restart in middle of compilation corrupts build. Have to go back to previuos version and redo the changes. Thank you microsoft!

That's why I said I might. I don't know what graphics card you have, but I almost always have to turn down settings to get stable framerates in graphically intensive new games, including most of the ones I mentioned, as well as Dark Souls III, The Evil Within, Shadow of Mordor and Witcher 3. Even older games like Assassin's Creed IV. Why would I get a K if I wasn't gonna overclock? I didn't change anything in my BIOS and it's been happening more the last year than before.

I have a 760, so its the one bottlenecking the system either way. I plan to upgrade to something like 1070 when prices stabilize mostly because same power consumption so no changes in setup otherwise.

So yeah with 760 im not getting max settings either way. But my CPU is never even approaching max load. I got a non-K one so no overclock. though as to why you might get a K anywhere is that K is way way more popular and easier to find and the price difference is negligible. I wonder how my 4670 will do with the new GPU, though based on benchmarks i saw its going to be just fine.

From Windows 8 I'd consider it an upgrade, but going from 7 to 10 sucked. Had to get rid of all the app stuff and there's a lot of things I can't find easily anymore(like the control panel ffs). In general it's fine and I haven't been too bothered by it. I wouldn't really recommend it though. Every time there's an update something fucks up. The most common one for me is the windows tab and activity field breaking. It either disappears completely or I can't click on it. Some guides say restarting the computer or certain programs fixes it, but it never has for me. I've always had to reset the computer to before the update...

If you had anything other than 8 then I'd say don't bother, but compared to that 10 is a godsend. But there's not much I can add at this point besides one more vote, do a clean install blah blah you've heard it already.

I've had no technical issues with Win10 since the upgrade. There are minor annoyances like the app menu screwing up the hierarchy from the old start menu and some functionality you prolly should disable, but overal it's okay.

Well, I just "upgraded" to 10 this morning. My graphics drivers immediately become massively unstable. "Try updating your Drivers" says Windows 10. "This version of windows not compatible with this version", says the latest version of my drivers. Fuck Windows 10, revert to 7. Takes about a minute and everything is fine again. YMMV.

Further to my post above, Windows App Store should be killed with fire. I tried it for Tomb Raider just to see (and because you could fiddle region settings to get it for $6) and it's horrific, no basic settings (vsynch etc.), no mod support, so way of even launching your game outside of their bloody interface - it should not be encouraged or used in anyway to my mind. GFWL2 basically.

If you don't want spyware on your system, you have to hunt down third party software to pull it out of windows 10.
That should tell you something.

Well bear in mind Microsoft is apperently rolling out another update that will make it impossible to turn off Cortana, so if you do I hope you like all your personal information being stolen and sold to god only knows who. Interesting that they would do this now after the free period after everyone who's going to upgrade probably has and can't go back. That's not suspicious at all right, like they were planning this from the start?

I've heard about that but I don't recall haering about where you can get it. Does that include Cortana and do you know what these programs are called?

It's free. Can't be worse than Win 8.1. So I installed it.

Seems OK. Haven't encountered any issues.

Eh. I decided I'll switch to 10 when I get a new computer. Old one will have 7 for legacy purposes.

If you do decide to switch though, MAKE SURE YOU DO A CLEAN INSTALL.

Oh, and in terms of "spyware" you can turn pretty much all of it off. And I find it pretty hilarious that they don't think that Windows 7 can spy on you JUST AS WELL as 10. 10 is just more open about it. I mean, for fucks sake, I think they started it with XP/Vista if anything. If you really want absolute privacy, just use Linux. Holy shit, people.

Of course you need to upgrade your drivers. Drivers are frequently OS specific. (To be exact, they are driver model specific, so if MS altered the driver model between Win 7 and Win 10, you are going to need a different set of drivers when transitioning OS.)

GeForce Experience had the OS down as Windows 10, I don't see why it would download the wrong drivers.

Chances that this guy is reading the system information rather than driver details. Not only that, GeForce Experience is plagued with updating issues for the past year or so.

Just tried a manual clean install of the Windows 10 version that I downloaded myself. Still crashes like a ************. In the end, whoever's fault it is is irrelevant, I have an Nvidia card and it works perfectly with windows 7, it dies a death with Windows 10. But anyway, thanks for the information.
