before anyone says anything YES i did search and all i found was threads about the leaked pre-beta versions of windows 7 or just opinions about it so i have provided a link at the bottom to where you can download the official beta from windows 7.

What does everyone think about it? if you ask me it seems to be coming out awfully quickly so i am downloading the beta now and will share my opinions when i have tried it for a while.

Been running windows 7 for about a week now, and I gotta say it's kicking vista's ass on performance. It's almost as stable too!

I might run Windows 7 in a VM, like Darkness62, but not right now. I'll wait till I get some opinions from professionals.

I've played around with it a few times on my friends laptop. I don't like it right now. I'm sure it will grow on me once most of the glitches and bugs are fixed.

Nope and i'm not going to try 64-bit until it is released. They always seem to be riddled with problems and compatibility issues even when they are released.

It would probably help if people like me did run the 64-bit version then maybe we wouldn't have all of these compatibility problems but its just too many problems and annoyances to get through to try and achieve something that probably wont happen unless another million people want to play a game that wont work on it. =|

My buddy tried the Beta and is liking it too. He had issues with running Left 4 Dead at first but fixed em quickly enough so it looks stable and more importantly *glares at Vista* compatible!

Personally, I'm waiting for the full version before I even start to judge it. I've already got high hopes, and I'd prefer to see the final product over a possibly-buggy thing. It's one of those 'Christmas Present' things. Though you want it so badly, you know it'll be better if you open it on Christmas Day.

Before I begin reading a huge article on it, could somebody please explain to me why I'd bother "upgrading" from Vista?

Okay I know that Windows usually isn't to innovative, but come on! I see a few new features here and there, but I can pin programs and shortcuts to the taskbar on my XP and vista. New preview pane to show all the programs?

What happened to alt + tab? Windows Touch? Hasn't touch screens and things like that been around for ages? Device management seems to be easier, but I never found it hard in the first place.

The bottom right minimize-everything-on-desktop button is actually a feature that was highlighted in windows vista, as shown as a blank desktop picture.

I am sorry inprivate browsing? come on Google Chrome has that. Sure there are some cool features like SkyDrive, but you don't need windows 7 for it. The shaking the window to make other windows disappear sounds pretty cool though. Overall, I think they need to come up with some real cool innovations that are not as old as XP, or say windows 2000.

everything i've heard about the new features of windows 7 really reminds me of an old saying

mircosoft - where do you want to go today?
apple - where do you want to go tommorrow?
*nix - you guys going to catch up?

a lot of the new features have been in either kde, gnome or enlightenment for almost 10 years now.

i'll just wait till it comes out and then upgrade from there, not really big on their beta os's

I'm running Ubuntu at the moment and want to get back to proper gaming performance. If I download this can I use it properly until release, when I will decide whether it is worth it, or will it just be a crummy preview in a VM? How would I even install through Ubuntu?

Don't feel you owe me an answer, just generally wondering and hoping someone might help me...

Funny, *nix still hasn't gotten the same level of professional content creation and gaming ecosystems as Microsoft (and to a lesser degree, Apple).
actually it's had it for many years already, countless big budget films were made with *nix, such as all the pixar films, lord of the rings and many more. it's also got a lot of music creation programs

it's only lacking a lot of games

all the gui improvements in windows have been in linux for 10 or so years and apple since osx came out. they are simply behind the times

I guess those must be enabled via secret terminal commands that no one knows about, even after almost 10 years. Tell me, what's the command to get Ableton Live or Adobe Photoshop natively running again? Notice I said Photoshop, not GIMP or CRIPPLE or whatever it's called.
you mean like this http://apcmag.com/google_behind_photoshops_new_linux_compatibility.htm

oh and gimp does as much as photoshop does and it's free. there are a few tools missing or different but it keeps getting updated

Your pithy nuggets of wisdom never fail to amuse, especially when it comes to Windows or jazz guitar ;)
i can prove you wrong fairly easily and so can most ppl on this board, we've done it time and time again. the fact that you assume you are so much smarter and better than everyone here makes it that much easier.

Wow, that's a tall order. Let's hear these so called 10 year old features.

On a side note, I don't care if Peter Jackson decided it was cheaper to use *nix and went that route. That's anecdotal and useless information. I want to hear some facts. What are these features you speak of, specifically?

And my machine, in colaboration with Virtual PC 2007, hates me. It says I have a non-system disk or a disk error. All the time.

Anyone got that problem on a XP SP3?
