Me and my friends were thinking about how awesome cross-platform gaming would be,so that we could all game together. So I wanted too know what you fellow escapists thought of it.

Do you think cross-platform gaming would work? What I mean by that is say people from the PS3,360,and PC could all game together. Would it be possible for this too work or would it just be a giant Cluster**** of insults and flamewars?

Those three platforms are pretty identical. Two crippled PCs and PC. Doubt it'll happen. The few attempts at it were pretty awful for one or the other. In shadowrun, Mouselook was crippled, console auto-aim was near-perfect. With every other attempt, console players were simply too slow to keep up with PC players.

It wouldn't. Simply because they are totally different platforms. Insults and flamewars wouldn't be nowhere near the biggest problems. Massive technical problems and it couldn't be anything even near competitive because PC has all the advantages there, in customization, latencies, controllers...

I could think of dozen other reasons as well, but well, after all it's simply: No.

The mouse and keyboard alone are enough reason to say that the computer would slaughter the consoles.

KB/M setup vs analog sticks in an FPS game.

No.

It's been done, but it was done horribly. Maybe in a game like Dead Rising 2.

From a technical standpoint cross platform gaming btwn the PS3 and Xbox360 is more or less plausible, however trying to throw the PC in there is virtually impossible due to the fact that the PC often uses a completely different control scheme.
However from a business standpoint, cross platform gaming is not likely to ever happen.

Cross-platform gaming does work. Final Fantasy XI, in spite of many fans having shunned it, continues to be reasonably successful. Supposedly Final Fantasy XIV will do the same.

Lets also not ignore the fact that many FPS games also already have cross-platform MP (hence a lot of bitching about the mouse's superior targeting capabilities). And of course those are going to be flamewars and various fucktardity because, well... that's the way it has always been. Adding platform bitching is just some extra gasoline on the flaming.

Can you name 2?
Halo, Halo 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Team Fortress, Team Fortress 2... those are just the ones I care about even slightly. Granted, most of those are XBox/PC crossover. But if I read the thread correctly, the PC is what people are complaining about, not PlayStation/XBox.

Multi platform releases isn't what he's talking about, he's talking about being able to play against xbox people on a PC and PS3.

Considering there are cross-platform game engines available (I'm looking at you, Unreal), it seems like the only hangup is server-side. Console to console would be totally fine by me, but PC to console would definitely be too skewed for online multiplayer to work. (It would skew toward PC, with the higher responsiveness of mouse/keyboard and better available graphics acceleration/network cards.)

It'll never happen. That said, I think if it DID happen, I wouldn't be surprised to see alot of gamers putting themselves into groups based on what they are playing on. It'll be worse than high school cliques.

I also agree that console controls wouldn't be able to hold a candle to the responsiveness of PC controls, so there would be a huge gap in performance.

The only one I can recall was Shadowrun.

it wasn't so much that the game was bad, but rater that it was so small in scope that people "finished it" very quickly. It had very few features and even less maps. The cross platform didn't kill it, the lack of real game did. MS was also keen on dumping the studio immediately after it was done.

I had the 360 version, my friend had the PC versions (we'll leave out the Games for Windows Live is awful bit that goes here).

It was roughly the same on both platforms.

360 had some autoaim, to help it... and also many PC gamers have their settings cranked too high and that helped the 360 people to keep up as well.

Mostly is was a short short generic game.

I dunno about competitive, but cross-platform co-op would be cool.
