Yeah I dunno. It never really bothered me in Half-life tbh, but maybe that's just the kind of game it is. If they had it, cool, if not, so what. Some games have iron sights, CoD and whatnot, some games have no crosshair and *force* you into ironsights (Killing Floor), and some games have ironsights, but it's more accurate to aim without the stupid things, unzoomed anyways (Rainbow 6: Vegas).
But honestly, it hasn't bothered me in any of those games. If you're going for realism and simulation, then fine, otherwise don't fix what ain't broken. But I'm a bit of a gun fan, so I like looking down ironsights from time to time, gives a nice feel sometimes (AK sights in the jungle ftw!)
A system which would make more sense in the police/military type games, is having the gun just below eye-level, but not strictly iron-sighted the whole time. That way you could still have a pretty quick draw and fire without toooo much sacrifice on reaction time (I think that's what they teach in Art of the Tactical Handgun/Carbine movies)
