Ok, seriously people. THEY ARE JUST IRON SIGHTS. Not only do you have a choice in using them, but it's a really really trivial feature! I'd understand the rage if we were talking about something like a two weapon limit, but Iron Sights? It's as bad as those people who say the entire original star wars trilogy was ruined because they edited in greedo shooting first. It's stupid and trivial and I can't believe some people think it can actually make or break a game. Are we really this nitpicky?

Not really, if done right they might actually be kinda cool. But with the way it's designed Half-life has never really needed iron sights, don't fix what's not broken and all that.

No, ironsight gaming is the way of the future.

There were mods, like Fakefactory's mod for instance that add ironsights to the game. I cant see Valve making Half Life still seem relevant without ironsights.
personally i am against iron sights as a must!
the mods you where talking about would have made it a choice to have them or not!
so they should include them but not make them a must for the player to have!

they should let the user choose what experence they wish to experience and track the stats(companies like tracking stats).

the stats tracked should be:
what mode did the user pick on the first play though (with or without)
has the user picked both modes (yes no,with no,without)
and how often does the user pick each option? (with% without%)
Considering every modern FPS has ironsights, a future Half Life game not having them would be seen as a shortcoming. Thats like a first person shooter being released nowadays without reloading despite FPS games not really having them until Half Life 1 was released.
my point is players should not be forced to have them because others belive they should be included in the game i dont expect players to go without just because i dont want them unless they dont want to play with iron sights

think of it as a check box in the prefences/options menu listed as iron sights with the option to check/uncheck it

i dont want to be forced to use iron sight in any future half life game i'd rather have a choice and if you think that players should be forced to use iron sights just because you want them included in the game then thats just selfish
if i did want iron sights in half life games i still wouldnt expect the players that dont want them to put up with them

But... Ironsights would totally ruin the view. I wanna look at combines/striders/hunters/manhacks. I dont wanna look at a god damn sight.

The only weapon in the second game that could reasonably by used to shoot long distances (the crossbow) already had a zoom function. Everything else was either too innaccurate (submachine gun and pulse rifle) or too short ranged (Gravity gun, pistol, magnum, typical FPS shotgun, and crowbar, unfortunately). There's also the RPG, but that makes up for it by virtue of the fact that you can manually aim it. Simply put, the games don't need it.

Edit: Also, take into consideration that, for the console version, the current location of the zoom function is uncomfortable to use for standard ironsighting, and moving it to to the right trigger, as is typical, would mean displacing the "secondary fire" button. I'm not going to play the game if I can't fire plasma orbs and bullets at the same time.
which pulse rifle were you using? I was leet sniper!

EDIT: plus, you guys haven't answered the one important question. where the heck would alt-fire go? and if it stayed where it is, where's the sights toggle?!

and besides, gordon doesn't NEED to shove the gun in his face, he has the HEV.

so i have no problem at all with iron sites in games trying to be realistic, but i don't think thats what half-life is trying to do at all, almost all of the weapons have a completely stupid secondary fire (looking at you UGL on the SMG that is the same size as the 9mm barrel above it, and also you single barrel'd shotgun with the ability to fire 2 shots at the same time). i think in a way, it would take some of the fun out of the game. there is after all the cool zoom thing that has a cross hair in it anyway that you can use if it bothers you that much...
sorry, essay, i'm done.

NO. NO IRON SIGHT AIMING.

Half Life doesn't need it and we certainly don't want it to be anything like Call of Duty or any of it's retarded clones.
I'm going to explain this quite clearly, listen close.

You ready?

Iron sights does not equal COD.

In fact, COD is actually the worst game i've ever used ADS for because it makes your gun instant super accurate completely! Which isn't how real guns work. In fact, what Half Life needed to do was to take that goddamn red dot off the SMG, I mean if I can't use it, why the hell is it there?

No, iron sights ruin everything, from CoD to real life combat!

/sarcasm

I never liked HL2's combat much. A lot of the time, it seemed like exchanging damage between you and the enemy until the enemy fell over. Rather MMORPG-like. Iron sights wouldn't really help that, but it certainly wouldn't ruin it either

Iron Sights would be waist of time. Half-Life is perfectly fine without them, what's next? a two weapon limit, chest-high walls, and coverbased shooting?

I don't know, I fear it would remove some of the HL feel of the game.

Actually, it allows one to pin point aim their cross hair where necessary. It also slows down the movement of the character enough so that they can move and shoot at the same time

It isn't "Pointless"

I don't think it'd ruin it. But just think of the stereotypical Valve fan... now think about their reaction when their most sacred series implements a feature used by their most irrationally HATED game.

I bet Valve could make it work well but just by being including a feature associated with CoD they'd get flaming amounts of hate.

I think it'd help. I always found HL's gameplay clunky and dated. IMO Half life is living on former glory and by now both its completely and woefully overrated.

I never said that iron sight was "Pointless", I was implying that explaining what iron sight is, is pointless since pretty much every fps game in the last 5 years has iron sight so it's a well known thing.

Of course not, HL's shooter aspect is perfectly capably of ruining itself without any help.
