If this thread has taught me anything, it's that the reward is not that important. There are people that would push it, and people that wouldn't. The amount of money they are rewarded is unimportant.

The probability of someone you know being killed is staggeringly small.

Let's say you know 2000 people in the world (Friends, relatives, work colleagues, aquaintances, & people that you see every day). The odds that one of them will die are approx 3.4 million to 1.

You have better odds of winning the lottery than killing someone you might know by pushing the button.

What if I were destined to meet them, but I killed them?
Especially saying if I would have married them, but killed them before even knowing them...
except now we're in a paradox.

How do you know that you haven't killed someone you were destined to meet already, all because a decsision you made, or an action you took, had a knock-on effect?

Actually, that's one of the other points that I raised that the moral goody goodies have chosen to ignore.

Sure, the odds of me knowing would be slim to nothing. The odds of me finding out, even lower. But the odds of that person being innocent, a child, a brother, a wife, someone who has done absolutely nothing to me nor deserves having their life taken away for mere material gain...those are pretty good.

Personally, I don't think I could kill anyone for any reason unless it was for one of the following: 1) they just hurt someone I care for and I acted out against them in a blind rage, or 2) it was Hitler.

My friend and I had this argument earlier. I feel that if someone were to die just after I pushed a button, then my not pushing it would probably not prevent their death. The two events are just so unrelated that my pushing of the button could, in no way, effect the outcome of another person's life. Oh, and I'm in a lead room to prevent any possible radio waves.
Edit: Yes, I'd push it. I dunno how many times. maybe 20 or 30.

I wouldn't push it. No-one on earth (or anywhere else, for that matter) has the right to make that kind of decision on whether someone lives or dies for no good reason, least of all for a measly $100. If it was guaranteed to only ever kill horrible individuals, I may consider it, but the paradox that taking such a decision using some magic button would make you just as much of a monster as the person it would kill.

Call me a big philosophical loser if you want, that's my take on it.

Although I am surprised (well, not really. More reminded of how much the world sucks.) at the 150 cold, cold people who would push the button.

B: No. Would not push it. Basically because stupid movie karma would probably have it kill my future wife, or the President of the United States, or the guy who invented orange soda or something, instead of, say, some starving child in Africa who would have died in a month anyway, or Osama Bin Laden, or Kim Jong Il.

There are a small handful of people on Earth I give a crap about, and even most of them are expendable. The one person (besides myself, and I'm assuming this isn't Final Fantasy VII's Death Roulette spell where you can inadvertently commit suicide with it) I'd genuinely feel a severe sense of loss from their death from would be my wife.

So therefore, I'm betting my wife's life for a hundred bucks at over six billion:1 odds. Is my wife's life worth $600B? Probably not, so that's a bet in my favor. And if I DID accidentally kill her with the magic button? Well, that changes the game---having removed all element of psychological risk I'd hit that button several thousand times, enough to bank plenty of money, and console myself with my newfound riches.

But if my wife lived, I couldn't hit that button more than, say, the five hundred hits it'd take to put myself the rest of the way through college.

And if you raised the stakes to a million? Five hits. That'd be enough.
