The suburbs. Space away from your neighbors, room for a workshop, place to park your boat, put up a basketball goal etc. While only being 10-15 min from your job in the "big city"

Middle ground is where its at. I live in a really small city and its great. And also since im in Tasmania im 45 minutes by air from melbourne. Melbourne might be Australias biggest city I havent looked it up and its great to visit(so much diversity of food!) but I wouldnt want to live there.
Melbourne is so cramped, all the houses even in the suburbs are as many houses on as little land as possible, and considering what you can sell a house for I dont blame them.
The rent and house prices is ridiculous. All those people saying buying a house is straight up impossible must live in those cities because shit, What Id pay AU$300k for in a house here would be like over a million there...
Sure you can make more money there but it doesnt really even out. If you are moving to the city for work, make your fortune there but dont buy land! If I lived in Melbourne Id buy a house in Tasmania, rent it out(negative gearing ahoy!) and get a real estate group to manage my landlord duties for me. Pay off that mortgage instead of a million dollar one...

I choose small town with a decent internet connection. Honestly, just can't seem to get away from big cities and apartments, in sweaty, polluted, jammed tropical countries. My whole life. The ongoing chase for $$$ dictates it. Anyway, I have less to complain about than most people so I just deal with it. Bit ridiculous that my 9km commute takes more than an hour some days due to traffic though.
My dad retired to a village in Switzerland, an hour out of town (Zurich), up in the mountains. The air is beautiful, the view is fantastic, people are friendly. Behind are hiking/bike paths, and highways each way lead to beautiful mountain pass roads. And he has UNLIMITED FIBER OPTIC right into his house. That's where I wanna be when I retire too.

I don't want to live in the heart of a big city, but love where I currently live. Just on the outskirts of a large city, close enough I can easily take the train in/drive in if I'm insane, but just on the outskirts enough for rent to be good, and traffic not as insane.
I needed another metric to vote. I live in Wichita, a small city, and I love it here. All the convenience of the big cities (except public transport is terrible here) but without huge traffic problems or major pollution problems. At rush hour it takes 30 minutes to get all the way across town. Otherwise I can make it in 15 - 20. There's no place I have to leave earlier than a half hour early to get to. I'm 10 minutes away from my uncle's fishing pond, 10 minutes away from fishing in the Arkansas river off the Lincoln Street bridge. I'm 20 minutes away from my Dad's farm where I grew up if I'm wanting the country life, and I'm 15 minutes away from Wichita's Delano and Old Town districts (respectively Hipster Haven and Hipster By Day, Clubs by Night.)
It has its drawbacks to be sure, but in the fight between small town and big city... I live in the best of both worlds.

Short term: City. Way more fun for short bursts.
Long Term: Small town. Small towns are simply better for your psychological health.
Best of all worlds: Live in town, commute to city.

I'd prefer to live middle of nowhere without people. I don't like humans.

I prefer cities. I don't like most people and most things, so cities have a lot more opportunities to find someone worth knowing and something worth doing. Mind you, I still go hiking regularly.
I kind of live in the in between of the two option, that is to say not quite a major city, but in no way a small town. I don't think I could do either option due to what I'm used to as a big city would be far too congested for me and a small town would have even less to do than where I already live.

I grew up in a small town 15 minutes away from the biggest city in my province. So I got both the amenities of the latter with the innocent 'crime doesn't happen here' of the former. That last bit has changed since I've become an adult.

Besides, there's stuff to do in the city and it's great for people watching.
