Definitely, the only reason I do tip is because they get ripped off by the current system. Now if they gave me great service I'd tip anyone regardless of their occupation, but that has to be A++ service.

No. Because that's how it is in England. We just tend to tip lower, around 10-15%.

I'm a student, so all my money is on loan, yet I'll tip someone who does a good job. My girlfriend used to work as a waitress as well, so is keen on tipping people who make the extra effort.
Wait, they tip more than 10% in the US?

Well fuck a duck.

At 17 years old I was paid less than minimum wage (in Australia) which is legal because I wasn't an adult, the theory is that no one moves out of home until they're 18. I lived out of home because I had finished high school, I figured supporting myself and moving to a city to study was better than staying home doing nothing for a year.

Tips helped, but then again, I was mostly a barman, and I like to think I made peoples night better than if someone else served them.

I occasionally made tips waiting dinner shifts, but bar work was better, I'd get tips on Coffee. Coffee!

I tip in Australia, we have a minimum wage law.

However, I'll only tip when service is beyond what's expected. Given that the level of service is generally pretty shitty here, that's rare.

I leave a tip because waiters don't make minimum wage, and if I was in their spot I'd like the help too. . . but how much I actually leave is entirely dependent on how good the service was.

If you'd prefer, we can avoid the controversy surrounding the industry at the moment and people's angsty positions on whatever side. Instead, just a simple question...

If the laws were changed to insure Waiters and other staff were paid at least minimum wage, would you stop tipping them?

Consider this from a economic perspective; since many arguments hinge on the notion they don't make enough. The cultural aspects of tipping can be a foot note at most with that in mind.

If minimum wage wasn't enough, at what wage would you stop tipping?

Perhaps also consider that prices would most likely change to compensate the increased wages in staff.
Any argument made about them not making enough is idiotic. It's called minimum wage for a reason, if they don't earn the difference with tips their employer has to pay them up to minimum wage. and no, I wouldn't stop tipping, because being a server is one of the shittiest jobs on the planet, and they have to get treated like shit all the time. They deserve every penny.

I always tip. The only time that I don't tip is when the service is horrible. I've only done this once. And yes, the service was so bad, that I complained and got half off my entire tables meal. This was me and about 4 or 5 others. And we all complained about it despite all of us having had some limited experience, at least, working in similar positions, so we were all very accommodating on this kind of thing.

So, I think that answers the question.

Here waiters got a steady income so I don't tip. Ever. I tip when I'm in countries where they don't, but I can't see why I would tip a person who makes more money than me just for doing his/her job.

In Canada Alberta, I'm pretty sure they do make minimum wage. And we all still tip. So I guess my answer is "yes."
It isn't that way here in Ontario they still get paid less than minimum here. I think we should follow suit with you guys

I live in NZ and well..you cant pay less than minimum wage unless you are recently hired then you get a training wage. And ya, we dont tip. I think its a good idea though, encourages waiters to actually go above and beyond their requirements, and generally if you are helpful and do well the tip would reflect that.

Here's the thing though - it's not that we tip in the US because wait staff aren't subject to the minimum wage; wait staff are excluded from the full minimum wage because they are tipped.

The fact of the matter is that ultimately, in the US, we tip because tipping makes us feel good. And that has nothing to do with how much the person we're tipping earns.

Honestly, I would tip less. I tip because that server is waiting on me hand and foot, and because they get paid less than minimum wage.

What I dont understand is that people dont like to tip delivery drivers (and im not talking pizza). The delivery fee is <1.00, and our drivers dont get that, though 50% of people wont tip. Kinda sucks. And they get paid 5.50 with no reimbursement.

I tip because all they are required to do is take my order, deliver my food, and forget about me until I call for the check. If they keep my glass filled and don't hover over much, they get 25%. If they hover, it's 20%, and if it's the bare minimum, it's 15%. I can't not tip, I have no clue what they have had to put up with that night or what they have to go home to, and it rarely costs me more than $5.

yupp dupp

capitalism at it's finest!

if the waiter/waitress is heeding my every call, bringing refills right when i'm slurpin down my last guzzle on the one before, and making sure I have all needed appliances/condiments (taking down my food order exactly as asked and making sure it comes out that way, I can be a slight picky eater (i like my salads as just lettuce with dressing, however most salads come with much more than that, the good waiter/waitress remembers that and makes sure its just lettuce and dressing)

as pointed out, it's a shitty job, if they are helpful and I have a delicious meal without them intervening in an annoying way, I'll probably leave them a solid 15-20% tip, if not, it'll probably be 7-10%

most waiters/waitress's i know as friends tend to work really hard and be extra nice for their tips, so I think it's more than acceptable to give tips when they've been great. Customer service is the worst fucking jobs out there for average folk, so bearing with them, i tend to tip when they do a job well done.

As someone who worked in the back room of a restaurant for a time I definitely do not like tipping waitresses and waiters. Washing dishes is faster work with less idle time and more responsibility, and often you have to help the servers with their jobs if they fall back, causing you to fall back further on yours. So when servers make twice as much as you after tips and refuse to share, screw them.

I still tip (unless they do a bad job), but "only" 10%, not the insane 20% people do these days. Minimum wage, no tips, that would be the ideal system.

But I do always tip delivery 10-20%.

Seems like a lot of people here don't understand tipping.

Tipping is not a reward for "doing their job." It's a way for customers to give feedback on and incentivize customer service. If a person just does their job, not good not bad, I give them slightly below the standard 20%. If they did poorly, I give 5-10%. If they did great, I'll usually give them anywhere from 30-50% (depending on how expensive the meal was).

I DO have a problem with enforced gratuity. That's just silly.

By the way, lest anyone accuse me of bias: I do not, and have never worked in a position to receive gratuity.
