Hey guys.

When I was a little kid, I dreamed of being an astronaut. I know that was a fantasy of many children but I used to spend hours, playing with rocket ship toys, reading books about Neil Armstrong and watching science fiction shows on TV. It was my absolute dream to one day go into space, maybe to one of those futuristic cities on Mars we were all prmised baxck in the 50's.

However, as I grew up I knew more about the requirements for what astronauts had to do so my fantasies, like many children, began to dwindle over time. In my youth I had hoped that we would, in my lifetime, reach a point when those brilliant cities would be achievable.

Now though, well, you know what happened. Interest in the space programme has dwindles considerably since the end of the space race and now the last of the American space shuttles (an icon of my early childhood) has been put out of commission.

There was talk of an upcoming space programme called "constellation" (for more information, watch MovieBob's Big Picture episode - Once upon a time in the future) which would have attempted colonization of the moon and Mars. When I heard this, there was a grand-canyon sized smile all over my face. Finally, my dream might come true!

So you can imagine what happened next. Yep, it was cancelled. Honestly, my faith in the human race could not be more rock-bottom at this point. That we have so lost our pioneering spirit and drive to improve that space travel, SPACE TRAVEL, is now considered "unimportant".

However, all was not lost. Despite the cancellation of the constellation project, there is talk amongst certain governmentrs and big businesses of a new Mars project. There would be a call for volunteers to be the first generation of Mars colonists. If this actually end up happenning, you will not find a happier human being than me.

I am seriously considering signing up for it if they ever asked me. But what about you guys? Who would sign up for this?

Bear in mind, as the technology for transporting human to Mars is still very much in early development it would most likely be a one-way trip. We would never see our world again. Not to mention the fact that as early colonists our lives would be harsh and difficult.

But on the other hand, you would be pioneers of a calibur never seen before. Your names would go in the history book, alongside Christopher Columbus, Neil Armstrong and others. Humans for the rest of time would remember your names and say, "they, they were the first".

So then, what's it to be?

Will you go if asked?

Nope, I think we've got enough shit to fix and sort out on this planet before we start messing about too much in space.

I'm not saying space travel is a waste of time, but we should get our priorities right.

I would. Even with the prospect of not seeing my family ever again. But I can honestly they would be the only thing I would miss. Hopefully we'd be able to keep contact, I suppose the guys in charge would make sure it happens.

The prospect of things going wrong doesn't bother me either. I can't really expand on that other than *shrug* .

Sure, why not? I mean, I'm not slated for greatness anywhere else on this planet. Might as well go scrawl "FIRST!!!1!" in the Martian sand, you know?

I would love to, but I have too many medical problems to ever make it into the first cut: asthma, hayfever, short-sightedness, Asperger's symdrone, dyspraxia... nothing lethal but enough so I wouldn't be considered good enough "stock" for space travel.

I'd love to go the mars! Altho we'd need to sort out free internet so we can download the newest games and let NASA pay the bill :)
And MartianWarMachine, you know mars is covered in Iron oxide don't you? Thus the red colour. So should be enough :)

Maybe, on one hand I always wanted to go into space and maybe live somewhere not on earth, but on the other hand, I really want to live in the pacific northwest with a little bookstore.

So idk :l

No way, Vulthoom lives on Mars as well as the Dweller in the Gulf. To many Outer Gods for my taste.

Would I volunteer? Yes. I would likely be rejected for many, many reasons though.

that's the realistic problem.

I not that crazy. It's not my style to just give up everything to go to Mars. I MIGHT be able to bring a few sets of clothes, but for the most part, I couldn't take anything else that's not essential. They need you to travel light, and I can't bare to part with everything to enter a land of nothing. A Martian colony would be a death trap for quite a long time. If something goes out, then you're pretty well screwed until somebody can fix it, if it didn't explode and take the professionals with it.

Considering you or anyone else won't ever have that chance again, and that it would be mankind's next frontier in space-travel, and probably the only worthwhile thing the human race would've done since fuck knows: Yeah, I'd do it.

I'd love go. Though I'd ideally like a way to get back too.

It kinda bugs me that the world as a whole seems to have given up on space. I know we have problems down here to deal with but in my opinion it would give us something to strive for, we as a race are explorers and we have very few frontiers left here on the earth. Space would be something new and exciting for us as a race, it would give us some focus. Maybe it could even be the solution to all the wars and bickering that goes on. If we aren't all crammed together on one small planet then maybe we would learn to get along a bit better.

On the one hand, I want to say "yes." On the other, I don't think that a linguist would be too incredibly useful out there.
