Hey guys.
When I was a little kid, I dreamed of being an astronaut. I know that was a fantasy of many children but I used to spend hours, playing with rocket ship toys, reading books about Neil Armstrong and watching science fiction shows on TV. It was my absolute dream to one day go into space, maybe to one of those futuristic cities on Mars we were all prmised baxck in the 50's.
However, as I grew up I knew more about the requirements for what astronauts had to do so my fantasies, like many children, began to dwindle over time. In my youth I had hoped that we would, in my lifetime, reach a point when those brilliant cities would be achievable.
Now though, well, you know what happened. Interest in the space programme has dwindles considerably since the end of the space race and now the last of the American space shuttles (an icon of my early childhood) has been put out of commission.
There was talk of an upcoming space programme called "constellation" (for more information, watch MovieBob's Big Picture episode - Once upon a time in the future) which would have attempted colonization of the moon and Mars. When I heard this, there was a grand-canyon sized smile all over my face. Finally, my dream might come true!
So you can imagine what happened next. Yep, it was cancelled. Honestly, my faith in the human race could not be more rock-bottom at this point. That we have so lost our pioneering spirit and drive to improve that space travel, SPACE TRAVEL, is now considered "unimportant".
However, all was not lost. Despite the cancellation of the constellation project, there is talk amongst certain governmentrs and big businesses of a new Mars project. There would be a call for volunteers to be the first generation of Mars colonists. If this actually end up happenning, you will not find a happier human being than me.
I am seriously considering signing up for it if they ever asked me. But what about you guys? Who would sign up for this?
Bear in mind, as the technology for transporting human to Mars is still very much in early development it would most likely be a one-way trip. We would never see our world again. Not to mention the fact that as early colonists our lives would be harsh and difficult.
But on the other hand, you would be pioneers of a calibur never seen before. Your names would go in the history book, alongside Christopher Columbus, Neil Armstrong and others. Humans for the rest of time would remember your names and say, "they, they were the first".
So then, what's it to be?
Will you go if asked?
