When the hell did I become a citizen of Italy? I must be dreaming. Onto the fights!Xan Krieger said:Welcome citizen, to the great city of Rome.
Why do people keep saying WWE is the modern gladiator combat? The two are nothing alike outside of the veneer of violence that WWE maintains. UFC is closer to gladiator combat; hell, even boxing is closer than WWE.Rebel_Raven said:That's what WWE is for, and other organizations if you can watch. Controlled Chaos, and controlled violence. That sums up gladitorial days aside from some executions.
Probably because it's more recognizable, more accessible, and at least we know it's rigged, and can be comfortable with it.FirstNameLastName said:Why do people keep saying WWE is the modern gladiator combat? I'm aware that there are injuries in WWE, and that even though it's all fantasy it is still physically demanding, but the point is it is not a real competition. It's more like a violent play than an actual fight.Rebel_Raven said:Probably because it's more recognizable, more accessible, and at least we know it's rigged, and can be comfortable with it.FirstNameLastName said:Why do people keep saying WWE is the modern gladiator combat? I kinda respect it more because week after week those brave performers risk real injury to entertain us with physical confrontation. UFC, and Boxers tend to only fight what, once every 6 months? Plots get resolved at a decent pace. When are we going to see the Mayweather/Paquiao rematch? Next year? Wrestling will have the rematch sooner than that, and will entertain until then.
Love him, or hate him, Cena's out there fighting every week or every other week (like a lot of other wrestlers). Hell sometimes twice, or 3 times a week if there's a PPV. Cena may not be fighting as "real" as UFC fighters, or Boxers, but if you wanna pretend there's no chance they'll get hurt,
Nevermind numerous other injuries like HHH's torn Quad, Cena's screwed up elbow, and numerous lives claimed in the business.<youtube=UOSYcM4AJ8k>
Gladiatorial combat back in the day was basically wrestling with more pointy stuff. People didn't die as regularly as you'd think, christians weren't fed to lions, and popular gladiators were frikking rockstars.
Professional Wresling/Sports entertainment just got smart and realized the human body can't take Mick Foley levels of punishment week in, week out, so they just make it look like it hurts more than it does, and they stopped using weapons so often.
Like I said, WWE, and other similar promotions wised up and realized that people killing eachother daily, or even going through MMA/Boxing levels of punishment week after week would quickly kill their talent, and they'd run out of talent by death, injury, and lack of people willing to get dead, or injured.FirstNameLastName said:I'm aware that there are injuries in WWE, and that even though it's all fantasy it is still physically demanding, but the point is it is not a real competition. Gladiator fights were very much a competition, not just a show. It's kind of like saying The Mighty Ducks is the same as an actual hockey game.

Fair enough. My knowledge of pro-wrestling is zero, but the guys you tend to see if you're not a fan tend to have a very defined look.LetalisK said:But your point is taken.
You do know there's enough evidence to support that in the old times it wasn't to the death either right?Xan Krieger said:Welcome citizen, to the great city of Rome. The gladitorial games are about to start, would you care to join me? Today it's going to be men vs men, women vs women, and a few convicts are going to be mauled by wild animals, it's going to be a splendid show. What say you, friend?
OOC: If the concept of gladiators was revived would you watch it? For the sake of modern times it's only between willing participants. Personally I would, seen enough videos of people dying for me to figure my stomach would be strong enough.
Sometimes it was, sometimes it was not. Cheaper not to kill people off, but by the same token, when you are a rich Roman wanting to show off your wealth, you might well get lots of people killed.Politrukk said:You do know there's enough evidence to support that in the old times it wasn't to the death either right?Xan Krieger said:Welcome citizen, to the great city of Rome.
