Poll: WOW Abandonment

WOW's a good game, it's just the people who you raid with can be a bunch of dicks at times, especially the ones who feel like they have to have a go at you. Blame the healers , blame the dps, whatever. I quit over a year ago, haven't gone back. You could say WoW is cheap, yes if you only have one account...

I used to play WoW 'hardcore'. I had several level 80s. 1 with like, almost full of the best gear at the time. I was in one of the best guilds at the time. I was known on my server. I kicked ass.

Then, just like the OP.. One day, I woke up, was about to log on.. then just though.. Why?? I CBA anymore. I had literally not a single ounce of interest in it anymore.
And that was a fair few months ago, and I still feel like this. Nothing at all is even slightly tempting me to come back to WoW.... I even played Aion for a while to see if that was a cause.. no. Maybe the thought of Star Wars was sapping my WoW fever. Not sure. But fact is, WoW is dead to me, and will remain so.

I dunno, I could never get into WoW in the first place. I would literally force myself to play, but I just couldn't.

Anyhoo, I know several people who have just up and quit, some of them have come back, most have not. So I can only assume that it's not that hard.

Its funny you posted this because my story is exactly the same only am not gonna tell it.

Well anyway i started playing WoW in september 2008 after a college friend got me into it. I loved it, i had a 30 human mage and a 56 human paladin, i played it until february and i had a great time over christmas playing it, i was in a huge family guy guild. I clocked up big hours in the game just exploring and barely leveling but i never let it keep me from my real life. One day in february 2009 i just woke up and did not want to play it anymore, but it drives me mad to this day because i really want to get back into it but i just dont wanna spend time alone in my house playing it, ad rather go out with my friends have a laugh.

*Cough* Anyways, its funny that this came up since I just decided to give up WoW yesterday.. Wouldnt be the first time tough, I have been playing since release ofc with many shorter and longer brakes. Decided to quit because for me, it has became pretty much "a chore" because of the focus on daily things that came with the new patch (random hc and daily BG) also noticed that apart from lore, the game didnt rly interrest me. So I decided to start playing Starcraft singleplayer cus ive had that game for ages but never played.. having a blast so far, waitin for Bad company 2 and SC2 nao .. and diablo 3 ofc <3

I take breaks from it all the time and go back to it.

I'm sure you'll want to play it again later on and you'll just pick it up where you left off, and if you don't then don't.

I do this with all games not just WoW.

happened to me too...

made a pally... got it to 76... just didnt want to do anything anymore... it stopped being fun and became more of a job... so why play a job i dont want to do when i have a legitimate job and school?

This is Greatly a bad "game" for those who don't use tabacco or alcohol, this is another addiction to add... compulsive grinding.

If theres nothing left to do, your only options are to start a new character or pack it in altogether. The reason these games can be so addictive is that the loot/grind format satisfies the hunter/gatherer part of our game, as we get the challenge/aquisition hit, but in a generally more consistent and less fustrating way (you aren't bound by the qualities your born with, as you are with many physical world endeavours).
I say play something new-6 months is a good play time.

I never even made it that far: I made a couple of characters but none of them ever really got past level 40: because around that point the game got so repetitive that I just found myself thinking: "Yeah, I could grind in Dustwallow. OR, I could go and clean the toilets!"

Yes, it got to the point where WoW became more of a chore than the usual household chores. In the end, what keeps most people going is a determined sense to want to be "better" than everyone else, and if suddenly you wake up one day and realise that the people you are trying to prove yourself to are mostly a bunch of dicks, then you have reached what is known as "enlightenment."

Funny I read this thread now, because I've been tempted to play WoW again for a few weeks now.

I mean, when I took the 7 days free time, I levelled a shaman to about lvl 40 while I still had my 80 main. Now, at level 40, things get cool with all the spells, mounts, talents etc. So I was anxious to begin playing the character again. But now, after reading all of these posts, I've seen the truth, and now I'm less tempted to buy another one of those hellish 2(or is it three?)-month game cards again.

I think I'll just wait around for BBC2 (I'm in Europe, so unlike you Americans, we have to wait till the 4th of March) and play MW2 for the time being

I'm one of those people who played WoW for a good few years, then suddenly quit and I haven't wanted to play it for more than a year.

Option 3 would make the most sense, especially from personal experience. Before level 80, there is always a clearly defined objective (leveling to 80) with multiple pathways to accomplishing said objective, and this is the really fun part of the game. Once you hit 80, what more is there? You're suddenly just another face in the crowd again.

One of the things I just missed most when I was high level was the lack of recognition for challenge. When I was a level 30 Dwarf Warrior and I killed a 36 Horde character that had the first strike advantage... that was accomplishment. That was a demonstration of pure skill. My guilds generally gave out promotions for 2 things, devotion to the guild and skill in guild activities, so when my Horde Enhancement Shammy healed through a very difficult dungeon for healing specced characters with little problem, I was up for promotion. That was accomplishment. There was no accomplishment at level 80. Your guild killed some boss? Good for you. Made 2,000 gold? One of my alts has that much.

I think you just feared that lack of personal accomplishment as much as the drastic change in playstyle. Essentially, you feared hitting the end of this really long journey. I myself never made it to level 70 (I quit before WotLK came out), and I'm perfectly happy that I never hit the end.

Happened to me. Seriously you described my situation perfectly. I also got an xbox live subscription and a girlfriend and so had basically no money left over. Honestly embrace this, dont let yourself fall back in, the game ends at lvl 80 where it stops being fun. I am also a massive completionist and did exactly what you did. The simularity is scary.

The next morning I got up went about my daily routine. When my normal free time came that I usually fill with gaming came I really didn't feel like playing WOW again. So I played something else. The next day the same thing. Its been almost two weeks and I have not even logged into WOW again and I am having a hard time motivating myself to do so.

Now, I was not an everyday player to start with. I probably played WOW less than my Xbox. I have never been the one to log 6 straight game hours in, but I have never been so long without at least wanting to play it again and so far that hasn't changed. Currently I have almost a month left in pre-paid cards on my account.

I have no idea why this is happening but I have several theories:

1. The last two weeks have been busy with school work and watching the olympics but massive amounts of schoolwork haven't stopped my WOW thirst before.

2. I have always been kind of a completionist guy. I love exploring on games. A few days before I gained my last level I had explored the entire WOW world and both expansions so there is the theory that the thrill of adventure, which I treasure, is gone.

3. I know that at level 80 the entire concept of the game changes. It becomes much more competitive, business-like, and official. Personally I play RPGs for the adventures so I could be sub-consciously discouraged by that

4. There have been way to many people that have had their lives ruined by WOW. There is a guy in my guild who has literally been on every time I log in no matter what time. He's a nice guy, but I never wanted to be like him. I could be afraid of becoming "that guy who plays WOW".

The only other people that I know who know about WOW are my guild and I can already tell you that they will just tell me to get over it so I can raid with them. So escapist, I am coming to you in my moment of weakness. Do you have any ideas?

Probably just a lack of interest in endgame content. You say you play the game far less than your Xbox and have no interest in clocking hours at a time. With that, raiding will never be part of your gameplay.

Around (level cap -1) it tends to set in: "endgame fever". Suddenly everyone you play with is all trying to gear for raids. All your quests start to say (Dungeon), (Elite), or (Raid) on the end, and you don't feel like sinking that much time.

You look at PvP play, and realize to not get utterly murdered by geared players, you'll have to sink a lot of time into grinding battlegrounds and arenas.

TLDR version:You've finished single player WoW, and have no interest in the time needed for multiplayer.
