Poll: WW2 games.

It's very close to being "burnt out" if not already turned into ash in terms of the flames of interest of WW2 as a gaming plot/theme.

Perhaps being a bit more original with the war idea would be a good bet, but looking at the options there isn't really anywhere one could have a look at: Humans vs. Aliens? Please, there is tonnes out there. Another war, perhaps? Well, perhaps but then some attempts to glorify war in a game may become "offensive" to some quarters of the world, certainly not from me.

Yep, it sure has. However, as people have said before if the perspectives were to change - it may become fresh again. Having said that, I'm growing tired of using the same old WW2 weapons over and over again. The Thompson, Garand, MP40, etc etc.
Go to other areas of the world in conflict, and suddenly things become more interesting. Different landscapes, different weapons, and different PLOTS.

I liked the guy (apologies for not remembering your name) that suggested to do a type of 'what if?' game. What if Russia decided to attack from Cuba during the Cold War? Would be a pretty interesting concept. Or just to focus on other wars from around the world. Anything but WW2.

Ugh, I haven't played a WWII game in ages and I'm sick of them, why won't anyone try a WWI game? There is the potential for some intense trench warfare parts.

I think that was the draw of FPS games like Half-Life and Halo. A setting that's somewhat original and hasn't been repeated ad-nauseum. (Although I'm not sure if that argument holds up at this point, but I think it did when those games were introduced.)

I agree with you. I just don't see why the level of originality of games like Half-Life and Halo can't be repeated again. It'd just be refreshing to see a completely new franchise come out that kicked ass, as much as Call of Duty did when it first came out.
Something new, maybe featuring on a touchy subject. The idea of playing as a German invading Poland, or France to me sounds awesome. Just a completely different perspective on a war we've played time and time again. Or playing as the Vietcong set in the Vietnam war. Something completely fresh that will grab the attention of gamers much like myself, who are somewhat tired of the same type of game constantly coming out.

I'm with Dele and Mariena on this. To recap, the developers of WWII games:

- recycle the same battles over and over. This is doubly stupid considering that gamers of today have little knowledge of, or personal attachment to these battles anyway.
- can't stomach anything other than Allied forces as player characters (and even then, the character better be an American or Brit, not some ungodly "foreigner" who might even speak a different language)
- not explore deeper gameplay with things like teamwork and tactics, or supporting/being supported by armor, artillery, air force
- not take advantage of fictional possibilities even where reality sows pretty awesome seeds for them. Operation Sea Lion, superweapons, a wealth of various commando operations.

So even if these same devs moved to WWI, Korea or wherever, what's the point? Caged by the same self-imposed limitations, the result will be the same run and gun. Not only that, but they will do their damnedest to butcher the authentic weapons and tactics of *those* eras to keep the gameplay as close to Counter-Strike as humanly possible.

No thanks. I'd rather they made yet another WWII game, but went out of their way to be fresh, interesting, challenging, maybe even emotional. The obsession with every title being "moar epic!" than the last one has got to stop. Games lose to movies on that front anyway.
