What would you do? If you had the choice.

This is the situation: You are given the opportunity to direct a movie based off of your favorite video game. But, because this is a movie adaptation, the script for it has to really be cut down. Still, what would you do? Would you A: keep your script as close to the source material as possible or B: would you give it your own touches here and there. But here's the catch: you practically have to change some things to make the story and action good enough to appeal to a wider audience besides the fans of the videogame.

Dun dun DUUUUUUN :3 What would you do?

For every game film fan, theres about 10 others that wish they'd just left the game alone and not made the film. I'd please the latter and pass the opportunity up so they end up the sucker who eventually tries to make it.

Option D) Get my friend (a director) to do it instead, cuz at least he'd write it well AND keep it awesome for the fans.

option E: find the guy who decided to cut the story down and kick him in the balls then make the movie the same as the game.

Step away quite quickly because I don't think I would be able to make a movie anywhere as good as OoT, that and traceur_'s option if I had to make it.

With The Longest Journey as my choice, I'd take the risk and go with Option A. Being an adventure game, TLJ was already mostly story, so in theory I wouldn't run into the same problem that most other video game movies have run into (i.e. trying to replace the gameplay with action/a nonexistent story).

Ultimately I'd want to go with Zach Snyder's approach with Watchmen, sans changing parts of the ending. Stay true to the source material and include everything I can. Release a roughly three-hour movie and then put everything I was forced to cut for time back in for a "Director's Cut" for either DVD or re-release later on. Pulling a page out of Tim Burton's book of surrealist production design might not hurt either.

Oh course, this is all hypothetical. Off the top of my head I can't even think of an actress I'd want to play April Ryan anyway. There's also the chance I'd screw it up, too, but on the other hand there's the chance that I could make something great...

I'd pass up the opportunity.

I'd rather just let someone else do it because i wouldn't be able to do as a good a job as I'd hoped and have some really angry people trying to assassinate me in someway

My film version of Tetris would be epic, so I wouldn't mind having to change some details so it appeals to a wider audience. It would have it all, the romance of the blue square, the invasion of the orange blocks, the tragic death and sacrifice of the green odd corner shaped block to blow the gap allowing the rest to live on.

Very interesting results so far :) I didn't even think of the option to pass it along to a director of your approving. Nice one :3

And it is true that you can't please anyone. But personally, I would rather give it a shot. If it fails, then it fails. The franchise can always be rebooted at some point and at least I'll be famous for making that piece of garbage ^_^ xD And I'd change it, because I feel confident that I know what the majority wants

Change small things that won't piss off old fans, but allows you to work it to breathe new life into the series.

Gotta keep the fanbase growing.

Once you have success, fame, money, etc...THEN you can make the movie you ACTUALLY wanted to.

Plan b because i don't really think even the hardcore gamers want to sit through hours of endless grinding in a movie. Some games are just so massive you need to abridge it hell i think that you should put a movie in the same universe with tie ins to the game but different story and mildly different characters.

I would pass the option up, because I do not want to cock up one of my favourite games. Although, a Bad Company movie could be interesting.

because I don't want to be the one responsible for butchering a game and causing a huge outrage from the gaming community, then go down in infamy as the guy that made that crappy movie based on that great game
