EDIT: Apparently option 5, which is Manhunt, has been removed. I don't know why, but it wasn't me. Sorry for anyone who wanted to vote for it.

This isn't supposed to be a flame thread, so sorry if it may seem like one.

Anyway, I wondered what would be the Escapists favorite stealth series, since Conviction was released not long ago (I think), so I wondered which ones would be. The series included on the poll are mentioned below, and I would like you to read them if you haven't played any other game than, let's say, Metal Gear or Splinter Cell.

One would be Tenchu, making it's first release, with Tenchu: Stealth Assassins, in 1998 for the PlayStation, and was particular interesting as one played as a ninja in feudal Japan.

Another one would be of course the Metal Gear series, having first started in 1987 with Metal Gear for the MSX2, and since then having a huge number of sequels, spinoffs, remakes, etc, etc.

Probably one of the most known would be Splinter Cell, with it's first game released in 2002 on the PC, XBOX and PS2 and having it's sixth sequel already released if I recall correctly today.

Another one would be Hitman, having it's first game released, Hitman: Codename 47, in the year 2000.

The probably most controversial stealth focused game series would be Manhunt, controversial for it's high level of gore, violence and being made by Rockstar, having only 2 games released, the first one being released in 2003 for the PS2 and later on 2004 for the XBOX. It was less stealthy in the second half apparently, but it's still considered as one.

Beyond Good And Evil is another one, although I may say it was kinda weak in comparison to the rest of the games in the stealth formula, it did had a particular focus during nearly all the game, and actually it did quite well, so it's on the list. It was released in 2003, and apparently there is a sequel in development.

My personal favorite and who vote would go for would be Thief, incorporation many elements that many games would use, apart that it makes stealth masterfully and having a great story, setting and AI (at least for it's time). It has three games released until now, the fourth being in development. The first game was released in 1998 for the PC.

If you other game, please tell my which, although I don't have any more space in the poll, and also please say in which platform if possible (I'm interested in more PC stealth games, as I'm a PC mostly gamer).

Purely for Solid and 3, Metal Gear series. Defining games for me, the first non Doom type action games to truly hold my interest.

Honourable mention to Tenchu, after Tenchu 2 they all sucked, but poison rice was classy.

My God man, you get so many props for including Beyond Good and Evil.

Like, so fucking many.

I voted Beyond Good and Evil, but I probably meant Thief. I just saw the name and went crazy.

I voted before spotting Beyond Good and Evil. No one ever frickin' includes it, so boy I got the surprise of a lifetime.

Thanks Mr. OP for knowing about it!

I think including Beyond Good and Evil as a "series" may be prematurely optimistic, considering how remarkably little any info comes out about plans for the sequel nowadays. Unfortunately.

Love the raw, primal nature of Manhunt - there's no gadgets or high tech. Guys are out to kill you, and you sure as fuck aren't going to die.

Regardless, I have to give the nods to Splinter Cell and Metal Gear Solid. Both have superb (not to mention deadly) stars, and both clearly know that a well-paced stealth portion is clearly as exciting as a frantic gunfight.

[sub]Let the record show I have never played Thief.[/sub]

Splinter Cell, slightly worried that Conviction is going to be too "actioney" to satisfy the console tards, but I'm hoping its as awesome as the trailers make it look.

metal gear, just cause it had a very good storyline and a good way of telling it. And after playing metal gear solid 3, I was just sold on the series completely. Can't wait for peace walker. On another note, has anyone tried to implement stealth as a strategy for a game where is wasn't necessarily needed?

I think I will go for Thief to be the best. Thief metal age I think it was I used to play when I was younger. Quite a lot younger. The reason it's the best is because I was terrible at it. Seriously I was god damn aweful. If I remember correctly (Correct me if I'm wrong) the first mission consisted of not killing anyone even though have a sword sneaking in a castle, stealing stuff and escorting a guy through when you blow a whistle and you or the guy can't be caught. I just got the sword out and started to apply it directly onto the guards heads and lost straight away. Second try I hit them with the club (because clubbing people wont kill them) and got a little further. Still pretty bad though. The reason because it's the best is because I suck at stealth so if I am good at a "stealth game" then it isn't the best one.

Close second goes to Hitman. I got Blood money down easily but the second game Hitman Contracts? Couldn't get past the third level and it took me months to do the first 2.

BG&E was a fantastic game. It has my vote. However, it's not really a series yet (since Ubisoft is too bust making Tom Clancy games to give a damn about Jade, but at least there are still the occasional rumblings that everyone's favorite green-clad photojournalist is alive and well), so I guess that the games that Ubisoft is too busy making--namely the Splinter Cell franchise--would be my second choice. And after that... well, I don't really play all that many stealth games, but I know that MGS4 was pretty decent once it let you stop watching cutscenes.

Metal Gear Solid all the way. And MGS3 is my all time favorite game. Stealth and action, all done amazing, combined with a great story, great characters, amazing atmosphere that really felt like I was in Cold War era. Everything in the game was perfect...except the camera. But they fixed that in Subsistence Version!

Hardest difficulty level in MGS3 is just insane! But I had to have all the unlockables no matter what.

I didn't think that Assassins creed was a stealh game at all it only had parts of a stealth game. It seems that even if you kill the targets stealthfully everone still seems to go DEFCON 1 and want to kill you. Good game but in my opinion it is not the best stealth game.

LOL, I didn't though it was not mentioned before in a thread like this. When I made a thread about PC game recommendations, BGE was one of the games that they recommended to me actually, so I played it and liked the stealth sequences, so I decided to put it on the list, since I though It did stealth well in comparison to most games.

I though AC was more action than stealth, so that's why I left it out. Also that's why I put the "other" option, just in case.
