I love Medieval 2 and Rome equally, but I voted M2 simply because I recently finished a run as Denmark. I do have awesome memories for Rome, though, and Rome II will be amazing.

As far as the vanilla games are concerned, I like N:TW most for the narrative and online battles. But if we're talking mods, then R:TW runs away with it for having one of the best mod-libraries around (M2 has a shit load of awesome mods as well, but I haven't played them as much).

Torn between shogun 2 and Rome. Shogun 2 is awesome, but the siege battles suck their boring compared to Romes.

With Mods: Medieval 2
Without Mods: Rome

Mods fixed a lot of the ridiculous issues Medieval launched with, particularly on the AI side of things, and the campaign and long game was significantly more engrossing than Rome's.

Rome, Followed by Shogun 2. Rome has more unique units, better setting, more factions, etc.
Shogun 2 has the benefit of hindsight. EVERYTHING is more polished. The diplomacy isn't a joke, reputation matters, the AI is semi-competent, trade with other factions actually provides a noticeable income, technology can be researched, generals earn skill-points, and on and on..

And now, we will have Rome 2, which will have all that PLUS the setting and factions with unique units.
And it will be awesome.
And it will be awesome.
And it will be awesome.

Having played all from Medieval 1 to Shogun 2 I would easily say Rome.

Can't wait for Rome 2 mind.

Rome is my favorite.
Love the setting, the battles feel the best (the battle feel of Medieval 2 stopped me from playing that game, just felt sluggish), the sea trade was awesome and it has some great mods.

It's hard to choose between Shogun 1 and Medieval 1. Medieval 2 was also a very good game. Loving the Kingdoms grand campaign mod at the moment.

I played Rome but I don't remember if I enjoyed it or not. Empire was decent when it wasn't crashing and corrupting my saves and Shogun 2 was a complete disappointment.

Medieval 2. I enjoy Rome, but I find Medieval 2 to be a better game.
In comparison to Rome, the battles are more slow paced, and cavalry can do stuff (Instead of charging the back of a phalanx, suffering 50% casualties, and having the unit rout) that makes them supremely effective.
The differentiation of castles and cities is a nice touch for both strategic and invasive purposes, as having castles is great for offense, but are useless when they are removed from any front.
The color scheme is also darker, and the unit variations help make the game look more visually appealing.

Rome got me into the game series. I thoroughly enjoyed the others, but Rome was comfortably my favourite.
I played the campaigns of every faction, some multiple times, as well as Barbarian invasion.

The original... and you're all really young if Rome is the earliest entry you remember! I played Shogun: Total War for years and despite trying its sequel and the other entries in the series, I was never as enthralled as I was by the first game.

Can't wait for the Warhammer one in development.

Total War is easily my favorite series. Rome is what sucked me in, and I have played all of them so far and am ready to spend another thousand hours on Rome 2. But my favorite has to be Medieval 2, as I love sieges and medieval Europe. Empire and on has not had real siege battles where you're actually besieging a castle since Empire and Napoleon had cannons and guns and Shogun 2 had wall climbing. Also Medieval 2 had the Third Age Total War mod. Plus I love my army of Robin Hoods.

Rome:TW got me into the series, and i love it, but medieval 2 is the gift that keeps on giving. i have about 7 different Medieval 2 mods on my PC right now, and there are new ones still being developed. i don't know of any game that has a modding community even remotely as active as Medieval, 7 years after release.

Empire and shogun 2 were good, but just in terms of the enjoyment i got out of it, medieval 2 has no contest

I would say that Empire is my favourite in terms of the campaign, while Napoleon has the best tactical combat in the series.

I said the earliest one you remember. Eleven years is not a long time.

I've only played Medieval II and Shogun 2, but while I have vastly more hours in Medieval II, Shogun 2 gets my vote. The polish, the visual style, the music, the everything. Plus, going from Medieval II's battle animations to the proper fights in Shogun 2 was awesome.

Third Age: Total War is pretty fucking sweet, though.

Medieval 2 is my personal favorite. I feel like that game balances out the whole AI thing. In Rome TW, Rome rapes every faction in the game they go against so that spoils fun, in Shogun 2 the entire damn country declares war on you halfway through. The only handicap in Medieval is the Catholic Church, which only limits your ability to attack fellow catholic nations.
