How much did you spend on your first car and how much would you recommend spending on a first car?

My first car that I bought is my current set of wheels: a BMW M3 E36 [http://images.paultan.org/images/BMW_E36_M3_8.jpg], paid 6000 euros for it. I started saving money 4 years ago. Until that I had my dad's old Volvo, which was sort of free. (I still have it, for sentimental value)

Just go and buy a datsun for $500, it'll do just fine.

I spent just under a thousand quid, so I think that's about 2000 of your dolleru.
Mind you, the insurance cost more than the car.

I have yet to purchase a vehicle and considering the frequency in which I venture out (read: never) there is nary a reason. It is my intention to purchase one by spring of 2010 although brand new, providing everything progresses accordingly.

What I recommend? Whatever is within your price range.

I just traded in my first car a couple weeks ago for my new 3rd car. 95 Grand Am that I got when I was 22 for about $3k Canadian (~0.78 USD in 2002). 2 yrs later, had to have the engine reworked for almost $3k Can. This was when it had only 90k km on the car.

It's pretty hit or miss with old cars; my buddy just got a second vehicle that he paid $1.6k for, then paid another $1.2k to get it certified and he's worried it won't last through winter.

My advice; buy a new car if you are able. And don't go for leasing; that way lies madness (unless it's lease to own, which is only slightly less mad).

What the hell did you get for a measly £500?! I coouldn't even get a Ford Ka for less than 800. I couldn't *fit* into it anyway but still.

I didn't spend a dime. My dad gave me his 1974 Dodge Dart Swinger when I got a license and when he got a new car.

From what I've been told, it's a good rule of thumb to not spend any more than $4000-$5000 on a first car.

Never had any car worth more than 500 euros / 1000 DM. The one i drive now WAS and maybe still is worth more but i didn't pay anything to get it. (inherited from my grandfather) It's a 93' Ford Mondeo.

I don't see much sense in buying something new or such if you can get a perfectly fine one for a few hundred bucks. (Also my father is one of the greatest automotive mechanics... IN THE WORLD... umm, yeah) So he can fix things cheap and fast.

Oh one drawback: I am paying a LOT of cash for gas. The crapthing takes 9l/100km.

I haven't yet, but I plan to spend about $15,000. My parents are going to put half of it up though

I hate you all.
Hahaha! *basks in glow of car ownership, then remembers road tax, petrol, insurance and maintenance...grabs gun.*

OT: Got my sisters Ford KA for free.
It's very third hand. And the sun visors are on the wrong sides.

But to answer OP, between $2000-4000 should get you a decent car.

Weirdly enough I'm getting the same type of car from my brother, third hand. My dad owned it first. Mine's blue.

As soon as I get to drive mine I'm going to blast the radio as loud as possible, it's a small ambition of mine.

Before you do, make sure it has a CD player.
I did that in town and ABBA came on the radio...
