Poll: Your Parents on Gaming.

My mom was a good sport about trying games when I first got into it, but it's not really her thing. She'd rather watch me play and provide commentary when my characters go flying off of buildings or something in AC2.

Alternatively, my dad spends more time on my PS3 than I do, and he relocated it to his office when I went to college.

Boys and girls, hear me, for I will tell you the story from my life expirience.

My Father was one who showed me games. His/our first game was some spaceship arcade, but then he bought a Sony Playstation. Thus my gaming life has started. At first, I've only watched him play all the games exept for fightings, that was my genre, then I started playing together with my Dad. He had his turn in Crash Bandicoot and then I had mine. Good times...
Then we bought a PS2. He played a few games, I've played a few, and then He bought The Final Fantasy X. I didn't watch Him play (I've played something on PS1 and PC), but he sometimes called me to show really beautiful CG trailer, or an epic boss battle. Then, after he finished it, he came to me and said : "That is it. I will never play games anymore." When I asked hin why he told me something that I will never forget: "No one will make a better game than this one."
Then I played it myself and understood why he loved this game so much. Hell, it became my favorite game of all times too.
The saddest part is that he was right: after 9 years, non of the games had touched me as much as FFX.

My mother is not enthusiastic about them, but while she might prefer I spend less time on them, she is normally quite understanding. She's a bit fond of some of the Wii sport/resort games, so there's that.

My father on the other hand is VERY enthusiastic about games. His mind doesn't think like a gamer (although I'm under the impression he would be unstoppable in a tabletop RPG), and his eye-hand coordination isn't set up for them, so normally he plays vicariously through me and my little brother. On occasion, he has demanded that we stop chores in order to play video games. He's awesome like that. The one game he plays himself would be Duke Nukem 3d, and he's really looking forward to Forever.

My only complaint is that he much prefers action, real-time games (particularly the Metroid series), wheras my cup of tea is more turn-based RPGs and the like (my brother's a shooter fan though, so it all balances out in the end).

Well I had a shitty knock off console when I was little and it had many old arcade games, my mom was absolutely hooked, one day when I came home from school she was on top of every score board, it took me weeks to beat her.

But she will never ever admit games are fun, especially not because my dad things they are the devils taint.

my mom is really into RTS strangely... my Dad is an accomplished PC gamer. He used to be big on PSX games but fell away during the PS2 era.

My parents told me that when I was little they would play Oddworld and Megaman when I was asleep. My mumsy also played Silent Hill with my uncles and aunt, and when I got older, we would spend a day or two playing Tomb Raider. My dad is now a connoisseur of FPSes, especially Call of Duty. The bad thing is, he keeps buying them for Wii.

I have to occasionally help them through challenging parts, but unless it interferes with school, they don't suppress gaming as a bad thing much.

My parents aren't opposed to gaming but they aren't exactly enthusiastic about it either. They know it's something I enjoy, spend a lot of time doing and know a lot about but they probably don't see the appeal.
My Dad has no time or interest in them at all really but plays solitaire on the PC when bored. My mum will play Wii games if it's plugged in and things like Guitar Hero on easy if we're all having a go. I remember she once tried play Tony Hawks and it was possibly the least coordinated thing I have ever seen.

My parents were pretty hardcore gamers in the past but they no longer play like they used to, instead now mostly playing facebook flash games, with my dad occasionally playing the likes of RA95, Company of Heroes and a few WW2 FPS's like I used to a few years ago.

Before I was born and when I was growing up my parents used to stay up all night playing their Colleco Vision console and Commodore Amiga. Games such as Project X, Fruit Salad, Swiv, Xenon 2 and many others were played.

It's a shame they are now into FB games. I personally think it's a step down, but tastes and people change and their gaming habits took a big hit when my mum had her stroke.

We recently got a Wii to help her with her left side weakness and they used to compete with various games on that too.

Well, my mom played Zelda, Tetris, Mario, and stuff like that before I was born, but recently, she plays Angry Birds and Plants vs Zombies, and she tried playing Portal 2 co-op with me once.
My dad also played Mario and Zelda, but he also played more recent games like Halo and stuff.
So yeah, they don't discourage me from playing games.

They're very chill with it. I don't think my mum is at all concerned with gaming, in a positive or negative way: it's entertainment.
My dad used to be a typical RTS fan, namely a fan of the Command and Conquer series. And we did play Mario Kart: Double Dash (I cannot believe I remember that name! Such joy! ) through, together, which was quite fun. But these fun times were foiled by the practical issues of boring, old, regular life, being that he has a job, and has to work to keep it.

They're very open-minded people, which I do find myself appreciating quite often.

Some prime examples to expose their hypocrisy: do either of your parents watch soap operas? Do either of them ever help themselves to a dessert/pastry/sweet?

Use clear reasoning. It's always a grey area, so they'll always have reasons against it, but you have to emphasise the fact that their reasons are less rational: assuming they are.

I wouldn't really say my mom was ever enthusiastic, but she doesn't disown me or my hobby. She has on occasion sat down and played a game with me, with mixed results, and I guess back in he day she was kinda hardcore with Tetris. So.. yeah I'll put Yup!

My dad was really into Quake 2 and UT99, to this day he plays Halo PC all the time. My mom is a hypocrite, she calls it a waste of time, while she wastes a lot of time on Bejeweled.

My dad, not at all. To him, I'm pretty sure gaming is a gigantic waste of time. The idea of me spending money on a console or something likely really doesn't sit well with him. My mom enjoys playing puzzle games on her DSi (Tetris, Bejewled, etc...)

Yeah, you're absolutely right, if my mum or dad helped themselves to a 'dessert/pastry/sweet' I would definitely take my right hand off of my PS3 controller for a moment to punch the face off of their face, then it would be back to Crysis 2/Outworld/Mortal Kombat...
