Ok, fine, they want to stop illegal file downloads, but don't you feel that this power can be miss-used in the future? Who knows what kind of political situation we might have in say.. 100 years. It'll be too easy to shut an opposition out of the net by saying that they're downloading illegal files (yes, I know I'm thinking very far ahead, but you need big perspectives on things).

Also.. allowing surveillance of a protocol makes it a little to easy to watch other stuff as well. Its like telling a post-man to go through someone's mail and only look for bills - of course he can then "by accident" open something else.

Idea: encrypt your transfers.. and seed encrypted legal files like Linux-distros just to annoy whoever might be watching you.

Edit: please discuss the issue below, I want to know more about what you think.

100 years? How about now? It's already done in China and a bunch of other less savoury places in the world (admit it, the Chinese people might be nice, generous and honest like all other people round the world, but their government stinks). It would only take a couple of moral outrages and a rapid push on the lawmakers for it to happen to us (See- Australia, net filtering).

I think things like this should fall under the same rules as searching your home, belongings or phone records. There needs to be warrant based on reasonable evidence. That way when they do get the wrong people (it happens), there's a recorded chain of command and decisions rather than some arbitrary dictator pushing buttons yelling ' but the records say this an you can't prove us wrong!'.

I'm fully aware that China is already doing this, and it is terrible. I wanted to address the issue of the possibility of this spreading to other totally unrelated countries (it isn't that I don't care for China), say for instance various in Europe. Seriously, if this hits us all, the world as we know it will have a greater possibility for changing for the worse.

We really shouldn't work ourselves up over this, I know it sucks but in all honesty there is nothing, ABSOLUTELY nothing, you or I can do to change or affect things like this.

You see the world works like this. There are two groups of people, the people with the money and the guns, and everyone else. The people with the money and guns can do what they want, when they want, and how they want, and they can even change how the world works if they want. They have all the power, they make the rules and control everything. The people with the money and guns don't really have a clue about what there doing and why their doing it, sort of like dogs chasing cars, but that doesn't matter to them. They just control you, set policies, and take your money, freedom, and time as they fancy. Everyone else place in the world is MUCH simpler: work, consume, pay taxes, die. You're to keep your mouth shut and your wallets opened.

In truth this is how it will always be. You see, you're life in the grand scheme of things is completely meaningless. Outside your small group of friends and family no one gives a dick about you and what you think because you don't have money and you don't have guns. Really though, this is a good thing. As long as you keep yourself out of trouble no one is going to bother you or try to stop you from doing what you want. V in V for Vendetta called this small amount of freedom your Inch, something that you can give but can not be taken. Hopefully you can find enough pleasure inside your Inch to make your short time here fulfilling for yourself, which is basically the ONLY thing you can do.

I suppose there is one thing you can do to change things. You can take your small freedom and sacrifice it for a cause. You can give up your life, walk into the woods and fight the men with money and guns. I don't hold out much hope for you but you never know, Fidel Castro did it and now he's the man with money and guns. Personally, I enjoy shitting in a toilet and showering everyday to even consider going in to the woods.

OT: Alright, sorry. Yes the world sucks and it really sucks when our own governments try to protect us from ourselves, but fuck.... I mean.... what can you do about it? Write a letter? Do you think that will change anything?

Take my love, take my land, BUT DON'T MESS WITH MY INTERNET! This is screwed up, what happened to the good old days where the government would just pick you up in an unmarked van and make you disappear?
