I've always pronounced it "meem"; everything else sounds rediculous. To me, it just clearly looked like it should be pronounced that way. "May May" and the like sound as though a 5 year old came up with the word, rather than Dawkins.

That is to say: the CORRECT way of saying it!

EDIT: that's "meem" for those of you who didn't go to a university class in phonetics.

I've actually never heard someone say May-may. I hope I never will... the Grammar Nazi in me would make me explode.

My girlfriend and I used to pronounce it "Mehmay" but after a friend laughed and told me it was pronounced "Meem" and this was confirmed when I heard Richard Dawkins use the word pronounced "Meem" I followed suit.
My girlfriend on the other hand refuses to acknowledge the correct pronounciation and continues to say "Mehmay" because she feels it sounds better.

First exposure was Doctor Who's 'Transcendence of the Repeated Meme' or whatever that faux brotherhood was called. So since that pronounced it 'meem'.. yeah.

I've always said 'mehm'. Never took the time to figure out how it was pronounced anyway, since it's something that's normally just typed I guess.

It is a word. [http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/meme] The dictionary does get updated from time to time.
Wait...so what you're telling me is that Meme is a word but POO ISN'T!?

I always pronounced it MII-MM. I think that is the correct way to pronounce it, though I could be wrong.

Man, its weird how everyone thinks that the other ones sound odd. People are crazy :D I was told its pronounced "meem", but its an internet thing, so you can't make one definition.
No, it isn't an 'internet thing'. As previously explained:

A lot of the comments in this forum have quite literally made me shake my head in despair. Admittedly meme is very often used incorrectly by people who want to seem educated, but who are obviously too stupid to find out the correct meaning of the word (a prime example is 'Internet meme').

For anyone genuinely interested in understanding the meaning of the word I suggest Richard Dawkins' The Selfish Gene & Susan Blackmore's The Meme Machine. Dawkins coined the term at the end of The Selfish Gene more as an hypothesis than a scientific observation, & years later Blackmore expanded upon it.

People who use words without knowing what they mean (& a very good indicator of this is not knowing how it's pronounced) are contemptible, simply illustrating their own sheer ignorance.

Ok, when you want someone to understand something, insulting them doesn't necessarily make them want to listen to you. For example, "...who are obviously too stupid to find out the correct meaning of the word..." and "People who use words without knowing what they mean... are contemptible, simply illustrating their own sheer ignorance." I'm just using a word incorrectly, that doesn't make me an idiot. If you could stop seeming so much better than other people, that would be cool. Chill out.

It's no-one's fault but your own if you use vocabulary you don't know the meaning of, & then make a fool out of yourself by doing so. Certainly don't try & blame your behaviour on me, just take responsibility for your own actions.

If someone says something & you follow them blindly without question then it's nothing to do with me, but everything to do with you. Critical thinking is essential for any individual with any intellect; if you don't know what something is then look at it, interrogate it, take it apart to see what makes it tick. But don't take my word for it, find out for yourself!
