Poll: Your stance on monogamy?

I'd say it's ultimately preferable, purely because it tends to work. I get that monogamy is not everybody's thing, but I'd say things like jealousy and other people tend to complicate and threaten relationships, wouldn't you?

Besides that, monogamy and commitment is a safe sexual behaviour. We do live in a world where STDs are fairly prevalent. You want to have full disclosure about what your partner does with their body.

For me, I can only be with one person. That's just my nature. I don't need more people. Frankly, it's hard enough to find one person I gel with enough to get to that place with. I'm not a people person; I don't need that extra complication in my life for the sake of adventure or whatever. But it wouldn't bother me if my partner wanted to be free to see other people, as long as they were honest about it. I'm not jealous. I get that everybody has their own thing, and I'm not going to judge people and tell them what to do with their life.

I don't think it's right or wrong, but it's a hell of a lot less complicated with people's tendencies to get jealous.

i tend to date multiple people at the same time, but i would never get married anyway, so this question is kind of lost on me. i don't understand why anyone gets married in the first place, i can tackle monogamy later.

Hmmm. Personally, I would prefer to stay with one partner. It seems... More special. But if my partner, and we're pretending I actually have a girlfriend for now, decided she wanted to sleep with a guy, quite honestly, I would be okay with it. As long as she stayed emotionally loyal to me, I would be okay with it. Not thrilled, obviously. But I wouldn't be angry, and if she decided she wanted to continue the affair, I would be okay with it and support her with it.

I still think that monogamy is a better option, but I can understand other peoples points of view.

It's right, because it feels right. In all the world, I would give anything for just one partner/spouse/whatever-the-hell-you-wanna-call-it. I resent promiscuous people for taking what I desire most and treating it like so much garbage. ¬_¬

I think that marriage should come down to personal choice. What happens between consenting adults should not be for the government to meddle in.

I would practice it as long as each party was comfortable about adding another person to the marriage. I've read a story once about a gay couple and a lesbian couple marrying each other then considering them all to be married to each other. They were all fine with it, why should other people not be?

I'm in no place to judge someone simply because I have no understanding for that way of life. Personally, monogamy is the only way to go for me. I like one on one romantic situations.

To say one "-gamous" arrangement is preferable to another is to assume information one does not have. Namely, what the people involved want.

That is to say, what the people who would be included in the biggest relationship would want. Only with that can a decision be made.

I'm going to go with, each individual has their right to choose how their relationships form. If you feel uncomfortable in a polyamorous relation, then don't get involved in one, and make it clear to your partner that you don't want one.

If you are comfortable, than so long as all others involved are like minded, go for it. Consenting adults shouldn't be limited by obsolete traditions in their decisions, but neither should they feel the need to break those traditions just for revolution's sake.

To all the people who say monogamy is right because it feels right, let me ask: have any of you dated or engaged multiple partners openly? We've been conditioned in society to be ashamed of such things, but I fail to see any documentation in any religious or political text where it says you must only love one other person. If it weren't for humanity's possessive nature, where we say "He's MINE!" or "She's MINE!", then polygamy wouldn't be so frowned upon. If you love two different people for separate reasons but love them equally, then is it really fair to anyone that you'd abandon one of them for another?

Alright I am in no way a biologist or anything this is just stuff I have read/learned and understand to be true.

1: Genetically All animals (Humans included) are genetically programmed to reproduce. Some animals have either decided or perhaps have decided on their own that only 1 mate for life is needed. However most animals are programmed differently, Males are supposed to go around and mate with females because they want their genetics to be passed on. Females are programmed to only want to mate with the best males. And by best I mean the most suited to make offspring that will survive and become the best. Like if a dragon can't breath fire and all of a sudden one can, every female is gonna say "I want my kids to do that because I wont have to cook for them!" If you catch my drift there.

2) I think that humans can be Monogamous. It very much depends on the couple however. If everyone does feel the love for everyone else it can work. I'm not saying however that some guy says "I can have multiple wives because my religion, creed, beliefs say I can!" is right. It has to be acceptable to all parties in the relationship in order for it to work.

As for would I practice? As of this point no. I have only found 1 that I need to keep me happy and I doubt I would need any more than that.

For me, monogamous relationships feel right simply because they do. Granted, I've never been in a relationship, so I can't really base it on anything. I just get the feeling that polygamous relationships could end badly due to feelings of jealousy and whatnot.

"Goes against our base instincts" is a pretty bad reasoning for polygamy, not to say there are no reasons for polygamy. I personally am a monogamist, not because I believe it is morally right or correct, but because that's how I function romantically. If people want to be poly, that's their decision, but communication is always important, no matter how the relationship is structured.

I personally believe in allowing people to live however the Hell they want. I have no problem with a polygamous relationship, though I don't I will ever be in one myself. I personally support monogamy because, well, just because. There are numerous problems associated with having multiple partners, and I am somewhat of a romantic. I like the idea of finding the one. Polygamy doesn't fit into that. But I don't mind other people practising it, and I certainly would not say it is wrong.
