Lots of awesome games wouldn't be possible without them. Even in real life guns are very significant. Cave men used stones, the Romans used the bow and arrow and we use guns.

What next I wonder?

I don't feel safe with a gun around, unless it is a hunting rifle that has been properly secured. A hunting rifle/shotgun at least has a long barrel so that it cannot be used on close quarters effectively, and owning one can be justified if you are a hunter, otherwise there is no reason to have one.
I've heard the argument that the world would have no crime if everyone had a gun, but that is false. Someone would try to commit a crime, everyone in the vicinity would open fire, and someone would miss. That is not safety.

Only in countries which don't have sensible education systems is death by anything preventable such as idiots using guns common, it's obvious when you look at guns. If people were forced to learn about firearms as part of public education then their would be far fewer deaths by natural selection.

The same principle can be applied to anything from Sex education to driving if people are not taught about how to do things safely and effectively then people will die it is as simple as that.
You should give the movie "Idiocracy" a look if you haven't already. It is not scientific, but does pertain to your point.

I only fired a gun (Colt Diemaco carbine or rifle, I can't remember) on one occasion, and it was very fun to do so, so I'd pick that. I'd like to own a pistol and rifle purely for target practice and I'd love to try long range shooting.
I have a question for you, have you ever used a weapon of any form to save yourself or another person? i'm guessing no. majority of people who have weapons, have them as a last resort or scare tactic, wether you live in a shitty part of america or just happen to know that there will be scumbags where your going your gonna feel a hell of alot less likely to be injured with said weapon
I always question it's use for self-defence. Said scumbags aren't known for their high intelligence, and instead of being deterred I reckon that they'd arm themselves sooner than not being a scumbag. Plus, wielding a weapon makes you a dangerous target, one an armed mugger is more prone to take out than an unarmed man who surrenders it's wallet. Afterall, the mugger or burglar has the surprise effect on you. You can arm yourself all you want, but if he's got a gun or knife aimed at you it's suicide to grab for your own weapon.

Like those people who put signs in their garden saying they've got guns. To me those signs say "Kill me in my sleep so I can't shoot at you, then empty my house of all it's valuables."

I say if you really want to defend yourself, get proper locks, get safety glass, things that are really for defence. Guns are for retaliation, which is another matter entirely.

Actually, most towns with very high gun-ownership have VERY low crime. Places with low gun ownership have the opposite: Look at Detroit or DC. They're hell holes. At least Detroit has economic reasons for sucking.
But is that thanks to the guns or thanks to the fact that such towns are usually not very urbanised. My village barely has any crime too but you'll barely find so much as an air rifle here.

I think guns should be commissioned by tthe government to EVERYONE. saying that this shouldnt happen is like saying we should saw peoples fists off, if everyone has a gun, noone will use it
No, someone will use their gun and all hell will break loose. Every society has mentally ill people, some have no fear, or are just crazy. "but just don't give them one" you say, well the symptoms often do not show, and it takes something to set them off, but once they have gone off bad things happen (columbine, Dawson college). Further many people, even with training will have crappy aim, or miss occasionally. So if a situation arises where one must use their gun, like a crime taking place, they can miss. If 20 people in a shop shoot at the criminal, there is a good chance someone will get hit in the crossfire.
Lastly, fists kill on the first strike almost none of the time, and if you hit someone they have a chance to hit back. A gun in all likelihood will kill on the first hit, or gravely wound. Once you get shot, you are also not shooting back, due to the extreme pain. If fists miss you look silly, if a bullet misses, it goes somewhere, and can kill when it gets there.

Firearms are a danger in the wrong hands, and a blessing in the right ones. I'm alright with civilians having them, as long as they are sane, functioning members of society.
im sorry, not trying to be rude but in what scenario would guns be a blessing?
IN the hands of the police or other law enforcement. At least, in my eyes.

I chose "all of the above," however there are a few additional things that guns mean to me.

There's sport, which includes everything from just shooting at the firing range to competing in the summer Olympics.

There's reenacting. I know a lot of people who do American Revolutionary War reenactments, and most of them own or even make black-powder rifles (a few own cannons :D).

There's also protection from wildlife. I know someone who lives in a rural part of Alaska, and she always has a gun when she walks around outside in case there are bears or moose nearby.

It seems we have some gun runners here at the Escapist.
Gun control apparently is a good sedative.

I find them to be un-needed unless they're for hunting or self defense.

And if I wanted to shoot at targets, I could use a BB gun.

Im a card carrying member of The NRA(National Rifle Association, for the morons out there) and not only do I love my guns, I also have a tremendous respect and a justified amount of fear for how powerful they are. I follow basic gun safety rules anytime, Im around them or handling them. And its my humble opinion that the best use of a gun is in the defense of a nation and self.

Also I balk at anyone who feels that bans on guns are the best way for us to protect ourselves yet when they get thier way they procure concealed carry permits inspite of all thier lobbying, shit throwing and fighting. (Im looking at you Brady campaign bastards) A criminal who's not allowed by law who wants a gun isn't gonna be stopped by a ban or them not being sold, if he wants it badly enough he'll obtain it and that quite frankly leaves the rest of us(who will abide by the law whatever it may be) screwed, asking to be screwed(or killed). The best way to stop a criminal with a gun isn't with a call to the police(who on average will take atleast 5 minutes to arrive on scene, depending on where you are) its with a gun in capable hand that you use to either disarm or kill him. And then thier are gun free zones but that my fellow escapists is for another post.

Choice #1. There's only one reason firearms exist - to kill things. You can sugarcoat it with phrases like "protection" or "fear", but it's only the fear of getting shot and dying that offers that protection.

Or for shooting targets, or for collecting, or reenacting historical battles, or scaring off wild animals...

Guns were invented to kill things, true. However that doesn't mean they can only be used to kill things.

It depends on the context, for example, giving a bunch of people who are mentally insane a bunch of guns is pretty dangerous, but give a bunch of guns to a dozen acrobats and let them loose in a water park or something, and what you've got is a damned good TV show.

It all depends in whose hands the gun rests. In the hands of someone who is responsible, sensible, and fully aware of the power of said gun, it is a tool meant to protect, for hunting game, target shooting, and as a collection piece. In the hands of those who are not, it can and will be very dangerous to themselves and others.

I've never minded them. I finally got to shoot a few guns for the first time the other day and I loved it. Might have to buy my own now.

Guns can save your life but take another in the process, guns can be a symbol of power that make people cower at your feet, and guns can get you money that other weapons cant.

Well, I am a cadet in the Rifleman's Association, so I guess... GUNS!! WOOO! AWESOME!!

I enjoy shooting guns. But I also know that even a BB gun is fatal when shot by a decent marksman with enough accuracy.

i keep seeing posts of "guns don't kill people, people kill people." but it's really hard to accidentally stab someone to death, but really easy to forget about the round in the chamber. but it's one of those things where it's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it, because any retarded monkey can kill the most skilled swordsman without breaking a sweat, if they have a gun. so the only real way to protect yourself in a gun fight is to use a gun and be faster to shoot with enough aim to hit
