A young woman in Arizona has just died from injuries she sustained when her father ran her and her friend over in his car last week. Apparently he felt she had become too "Westernized" and ran her over , fled to Mexico and took a plane to Great Britain. He was denied entry into Great Britain and sent back to the US where he is in prison under a 5 million dollar bail. Read the full text here. Now I try to show at least some basic respect to peoples' stupid ancient traditions revolving around how people are denigrated by sex, hierarchy and caste.

In your post it doesn't mention that they were Iraqi and as such most people won't know what tradition you are talking aboot unless they click the link.

Yes,my tradition is shit. My tradition is the shit.

In seriousness, most old traditions are not good for public safety. Sure,we can keep harmless ones, but the ones endangering living things should be defenestrated.

How many 'Law and Order' episodes alone have been written on that very concept? I can count seven.
I don't think that's necessarily a 'tradition'. A tradition is a habit or ritual passing down through generations. This specific case seems more like a man's own Opinion becoming a personal, unbreakable Law that has become a form of Control; which is different from a tradition.

Tradition is an important way to honor you're ancestors and remember them, but they should never dictate one's actions.

What I think is a good point was when the British had control of India they banned the practice of widows throwing themselves (or being thrown forcibly) on their deceased husband's funeral pyres.

A british governor or something, trying to find the exact quote on wikipedia, when told it was their "tradition", replied something like "Very well but it is our a tradition to hang anyone who burns a women alive"

Some tradition is founded on rational behavior. Therefore, to live completely by tradition is irrational, but so also is to write off all tradition as shit.

Tradition is bollocks. If you live by the viewpoint your community lives by, BECAUSE it's your community and tradition, then you are doing it for the wrong reasons. It might happen that you treasure the same way of life, which is fair enough (no need for anti-tradition just BECAUSE it's tradition), but do it because YOU want it.

kthx-BYE (caps pr0)

Whatever, just wash your hands.
meh, tradition is what you call something that is too weak to stand on its own so you have to defend it by saying "we have always done this"
