In most applications, it takes "talentless" to the level of "tasteless".
As a matter of treating it as an alternate "Instrument"...it's rarely used that way.

Kill it with fire.

It's hardly ever useful and only serves most of the time to create horrible "musician's", who can't even sing or create decent music. People who are good singers don't require auto-tune.

When done right I do like auto-tune. Stuff like Daft Punk I've always fancied. And hell, I even like Cher's Believe. (Which I believe was one of the first songs to use auto-tune.)

Now-a-days though, it' clearly abused in a lot of today's songs. Hopefully that'll change soon.

It completely removes all of the humanity from a song. If you have to "tweak" you probably shouldn't have a record deal in the first place. Can you imagine if, for example, Kurt Cobain used auto-tune? No one would FEEL Nirvana. The polish has to come off and you have to bare your insides before you can call yourself an "artist". I like auto-tune in techno-y, teen house party make out music (Metro Station, etc.) but I'm sick of all of these people, some of whom have wonderful voices, killing this tool that should have never existed. If you can't reach a note, change it. If you can't sing, don't. If you want to suck the soul out of the greatest tool of self-expression ever, use auto-tune. :/

I want to be a musician when I grow up.

Most people's view on auto tune is a view with Justin Bieber and Kanye West and such in it, which is the part that needs to die in a horrible, horrible fire.

But did you guys know that auto tune is also used to "polish" most albums today. Hell, I know an artist who's releasing an album soon, and he's used a little auto tune to make the album sound pitch perfect. And you know what? It does sound really good. He's an awesome singer without auto tune, but with it, it sounds more finished, you know?

But still, the Auto tune used in the top list pop music and such needs to die. Fast.

Auto-tune must only be used for artistic purposes.
It has it's place, and it's obvious to tell when it's being applied appropriately and when it's NOT.

BECAUSE IF EVERY GODDAMN SONG IN YOUR ALBUM IS AUTO-TUNED THEN YOU FAIL AND CAN'T SING FOR SHIT.

Remember when artists sang the right notes, it wasn't digitally altered?

You know, back when popular singers actually had fucking talent?
So...You're going to do something about it?

Just wondering.
That's the problem with being a consumer. You can pay to support artists/industries you like, but you can't pay to antagonize artists/industries you hate.
No, I ask: are you going to do something about it?

As in: Are you going to protest, troll, get people notice etc etc.

However, sounds good in a selection of songs.

EDIT 2: Oh dur and of course probably one of the first people to really use auto tuning, Daft Punk

The problem I have with auto-tune is as follows:

It makes people sound literally perfect. It gives them the ability to hit any note they want. It's HORRIBLE.

Nobody can ACTUALLY hold a perfect note all the time, it's just not possible. Auto-tune makes that possible, and while that might be seen as a good thing, it's actually annoyingly perfect.

It irritates me.

I think there is a few genres in which it can work but I only like it when used for effect, not to fix ones voice. "Hide and Seek" by Imogen Heap, for instance is good auto-tune.

It's only good in those youtube parody songs people do, like the Gingers have souls one or bed intruder.

What many of you don't realize is that nearly every producer uses an auto tuner to touch up a artist's vocals. You still have to be able to sing... like you have to be a GOOD singer, for an auto tuner to actually work properly. That is, unless the producer actually composes every single note and maps your voice to them. Rarely in music do you hear this.

I personally use an auto tuner when recording my music. I place my recorded vocals on a track with the plugin on it, and play them back. The auto tuner quickly shows me the places in which I made a singing error (auto tuner hits the wrong note and/or jitters), and then I record that part over, until the auto tuner picks up every single note how I intended it to.

I then REMOVE the auto tuner, listen to the vocals without it, and realize, "these are very similar; the one with the plain vocals sounds very good, but the one with the auto tuner sounds perfect." The auto tuner I use is not noticeable UNLESS you are a bad singer. Auto tuners are designed to make great singers sound even better, so their music's quality is as good as it can possibly be.

I am positive many of the artists you listen to use a type of auto tuner and you don't even notice it.

Autotune can be used for many things.

"Auto-Tune uses a phase vocoder to correct pitch in vocal and instrumental performances. It is used to disguise off-key inaccuracies and mistakes, and has allowed singers to perform perfectly tuned vocal tracks without needing to sing in tune. While its main purpose is to slightly bend sung pitches to the nearest true semitone (to the exact pitch of the nearest tone in traditional equal temperament), Auto-Tune can be used as an effect to distort the human voice when pitch is raised/lowered significantly."

Not only is it used for that electronic, multi-layered voiced that seems so popular, it can also be used to make the studio version of any song sound perfect. To correct small mistakes in the singer's voice, or the instruments.

So my answer is: depends. Mutli-layered, overused, electronic crap? Kill it with fire.
Slightly correcting tones in a song to make it sound better, without it being a noticeable effect at all? Don't stop.
