A hypothetical question and a bit of an edumacation for ya. Let?s say you?re a police officer. To assist with the hypothetical you?re a city cop your city is in the 350,000-500,000 range. Imagine the city is in your country or if you really don?t want to you can imagine the US cuz that?s what this knowledge is based off of.
You are a corporal (2nd lowest rank) and are now eligible for special detail which would you choose? I will list some information about each. Obviously different departments divide duties differently but this is a pretty general organization. These are ?regular details? where you will almost always be doing that job every day.
Before you ask there is no ?don?t care or fuckdapolice? option cuz that doesn?t make sense in the hypothetical choosing an option like that is like saying ?I don?t want to participate.?

Your job is to clean the street of illegal drugs and narcotics. You will likely get to go undercover which is an adrenaline rush like no other. You?re job isn?t the small potatoes like a crack addict on the street. You?re job is the dealers, mixers, and the shippers the ?big fish?. You will need to make connections with the seedy underworld to gather information this is the closest you will probably get to being a secret agent. The amount of arrests you will make is staggering. A good enough bust can get a medal (which can help promotions and raises) as can undercover work. If you want to work K-9 you might also work for vice and with vice frequently (but not necessarily) You will probably be able to write a very interesting memoir when you?re done.
Cons: If you have a family say goodbye to them cuz depending on how deep undercover you go you might not get to go home for weeks. This is also one of the most dangerous jobs as most dealers are dangerous either because they?re crazy or like a little dictator with a small army of sociopaths.

Your job is to respond to potentially lethal emergency situations. Hostage situations, a man rampaging on the street with an assault rifle or extracting a very dangerous and wanted suspect are your domain. Mostly you will be doing extraction going in to a house with guns and battering rams getting some crazy murderer or big time dealer. You will get to learn to use pretty much every weapon even the most esoteric or sci-fi that the department has to offer. Sniper Rifles, flashlights that blind people for 20 seconds, pepper ball guns. If you work hard enough you might drive the big truck or urban assault vehicle that SWAT uses.
Cons: About 50% of your time will be training over and over. If you fail at your monthly tests even once you?re out and they aren?t easy tests. 25% of your time will be you back on the beat just like you were before. When you do extraction the vice, homicide, sex crimes detectives are going to be calling the shots not you. Despite the fact they probably have no training in extractions. If you are responding to that 1% chance of a hostage situation if ANYTHING goes wrong at all. Your job is on the line after the fact.

You get the motorcycle. You were on patrol before but now the road is yours. Traffic stops are your only major responsibility and deciding where to set up ?speed traps? when there is a major drinking holiday you will more likely be back in a squad car but other than the Brass (high ranking officials) you will be calling the shots. The only time you respond to something that isn?t traffic is when it?s a CAU (calling all units). Which don?t happen that often. When you make an arrest you usually don?t have to bring the arrest back to the station either you call a beat cop to do that (this is much nicer perk than it sounds like)
Cons: You will constantly have to deal with rookies. In the winter months assuming your area has snow you will go back in the squad car though your duties remain the same. You will also probably never get a single holiday off as your unit is expected to make checkpoints on holidays to check for DUIs.

HCS. Sounds odd doesn?t it? Also called 'Mounted' You?re job is to make the city look good. You will be using a horse as your main means of transportation. Your job is to patrol tourist areas or any large parks (where vehicles aren?t allowed) your city might have. You are also responsible for any special visitor to the city like foreign dignitaries or heads of state. Another added detail which is rare is ?ceremonies? which translates to ?funerals for officers? the 21 gun salute or the motorcade that comes with a fallen officer you and your unit are responsible for making sure the fallen are properly honored. A great way to ?network? and meet important people.
Cons: Again if your more special details come up it doesn?t matter if you had a vacation planned the president is coming to town and you?re going to be there. There also is a high chance you will be the butt of many jokes among your colleagues as those ?tourist? areas have lot of cameras from private businesses and many private security forces as well so the crime tends to be low and you?re considered to be doing a ?soft job.? Oh and your grooming habits better be up to snuff.

A bit of a misnomer as armed robberies (Which are very much against PEOPLE) are also your domain. Your duties are robberies, burglaries, shop lifting, and fraud. You will always feel like you?re in a game of cat and mouse. Really strong detective skills can develop here. You will go to every pawn shop in town so often that you will learn the names of every shop keeper and even his kid?s birthdays and when his wedding anniversary is. You will also occasionally catch some big fish if you get to go into fraud. EDIT: You are also typically speaking Responsable for animal cruelty cases. You wear many hats.
Cons: Your clearance rate (solved crimes) is going to be low. Despite what the general public thinks most burglars leave almost NO clues. No fingerprints, they use stolen cars, and are in neighborhoods they don?t live in ?a white guy average build? is about all the description you are going to get. This can be incredibly frustrating. Robberies are a lot easier to clear but still incredibly difficult.[/spoilers]

Some departments call it Special Victims Unit or Crimes against Peoples (special) or things like that. Rapists, Child Molesters, and more recently internet predators are in your domain. The clearance rate for these crimes is high as most people know their offender. You are definitely going to learn how to speak tactfully and sympathetically for the victims. You are getting real scum off the streets. You will definitely be very well respected by your peers here.
Cons: Some cases aren?t solved. Sometimes all it comes down to is she said he said and even if you know the scum deserves to be locked up the jury will clear them. Every case you lose and every time you see a little girl whose mother watched as she got raped. You will lose a part of your soul. Nothing will give you as many sleepless nights of guilt or second guessing yourself as working SC.

?The Show? You want honor and accolades? Heres where you get it. On many departments you can?t work HC until you?ve done some other detective work first. Your domain is homicides and attempted homicides. You will learn about the art of the interrogation more so than the other detectives. Every detective skill is honed here. Do need to say how satisfying it is to catch them here?
Cons:
90% of your cases will go like this. ?Some gangbanger scum shot some other gangbanger scum over something illegal they were doing? but you work it like any other case. You clearance rate on those cases will be very low as it will be in the neighborhood where there are ?no witnesses.? If you get a big case that?s on the news you will be working a lot of overtime. Period.

Who needs the stress of this new shit? Stay on the beat and climb to sergeant, lieutenant and captain as fast as you can. You drive around in an area of town responding to various calls. If it falls in the domain of another department you secure and protect the crime scene till they show up then you become their ?assistant? for a little while. But when you start getting promotions you will be calling the shots to the other patrolmen.
Cons:
You won?t learn much that?s new and sometimes this can be the slowest way to climb the ladder as well. Depending on how the department is being run.
